Holiday accommodation from hell! AIBU?

NC for this.

My partner, myself and our toddler have gone on a weekend away five hours from home. We picked a lovely lodge with a hot tub. Well, we’ve arrived and it’s awful. It’s not a lodge, it’s a cottage which is also fine but not as advertised. But that isn’t the issue - the hot tub is around the side of the building with the jets not working, the cot they’ve put in the bedroom is broken, there is dust absolutely everywhere and the bathroom is filthy (last persons toilet stains still there), no plug for the bath, there’s an upstairs bit with flimsy railing so I don’t want my toddler upstairs, the oven is broken, there is a random freezer in the living room and the Wifi doesn’t work. I might seem to be overreacting here (and please tell me if I am) but £400 for this, and that’s a lot of money to us. We wanted a relaxing weekend away with local things to do for our toddler - which there thankfully is - but I just want to go home. I’ve contacted the owner who is rejecting my calls and has ignored my message, I’ve contacted the third party we booked through who are telling me to get in touch with the owner, and it’s too late to travel back home now. AIBU to leave tomorrow and ask for a full refund, or shall I just suck it up and get on with the weekend?

Oh, and we’re on a main road which is super noisy. :(

Take lots of photos and write down the issues so you can send to the site you booked on. Were there photos when you booked? Is it the same place?

TolkiensFallow · 18/03/2022 21:10

If it’s really filthy I’d either go home or go to a premier in

Weekendfromhellll · 18/03/2022 21:11

@CastleCrasher I will do! There were photos but definitely in its ‘better days’ and lots of model shots. And from the way the pictures were angled it looked like a lodge with decking and a hot tub. It’s a trusted third party and we’ve booked through them before and had a lovely stay, but feel like this is taking the mick.

I would take a lot of photographs - close-ups of the dirt and the broken cot and any other issues - and a sound recording of the road noise. I would then go home and make a montage of the photographs juxtaposed against the advertising shots for contrast. Then put together a comprehensive complaint and ask for a full refund, preferably with compensation for your ruined holiday.

Hoppinggreen · 18/03/2022 21:16

It’s pretty cheap but that still doesn’t justify the things you have listed.
Take lots of photos and escalate it, it’s pretty disgraceful

Finlandandsweden · 18/03/2022 21:18

That's just awful! As above have suggested then move to a travel. Lodge

ZiggysPFrow · 18/03/2022 21:29

We had similar last Sept with Glamping booked through Canopy and Stars, the bathroom was covered in black mould... It was disgusting we recieved an inconsequential partial refund. So disappointing

Mummyoflittledragon · 18/03/2022 21:30

YANBU
I agree with the advice take photos of everything and make notes. Then demand your money back. The hot tub doesn’t work if there’s no jets. Does the oven function etc?

EthelTheAardvark · 18/03/2022 21:32

Make sure you follow up any phone calls in writing so there's a paper trail

EthelTheAardvark · 18/03/2022 21:33

Tweet the agents and raise this on their Facebook page, if they have one.

Shadowboy · 18/03/2022 21:34

Is it booked through Sykes?

Not sure I think £400 for a weekend is cheap!
Hoppinggreen · 18/03/2022 21:37

I have been booking several weekends away over the coming months and SC accommodation in The UK is quite pricey at the moment
Either way it could be half what OP pad and it’s still not good enough

Momicrone · 18/03/2022 21:41

Sounds awful, but could you not see it was on a main road from the map?

LadyMaid · 18/03/2022 21:43

I am sorry that you are having to experience this.
You deserve better.

For each area/item you are unhappy with, take one close up picture and one picture from further away.

I would also make a list of the items and text or email the landlord.

I would also contact the third party with the pictures and list.

This is false advertisement.
Don't back down.

£400 can get you two nights in a lovely hotel, with breakfast.

You'd get better standards in a £50 quid travelodge!
dudsville · 18/03/2022 21:45

Your account reminded me of a similar rental. I went to plug my phone in by the bed side table and spied so much dust behind the bed, so we'd be breathing that in. There was dust everywhere, skirting boards missing. Thanlfully our bathroom was clean. But like you the hot tub wasn't up to scratch, but also there were neighbours right next to the hot tub, the pics indicated someting secluded and idyllic but it was on a noisy road! I learned to use google maps to learn more about places before purchasing. Good luck to you OP. We left our accomodation early. Hope you can make things better tomorrow.

MissAmbrosia · 18/03/2022 21:46

Who did you book through? Are they on Twitter/FB? Were there previous reviews? I would take lots of photos. If it's unsafe I would try to move elsewhere, but I realise that might not be affordable.

Thewindwhispers · 18/03/2022 21:47

Sorry OP ☹️

Take lots of photos, email some tonowner and third party, then leave demanding refund for breach of contract and false advertising. If you paid by credit card or PayPal then you might be able to get the payment reversed.

I don’t think it’s cheap at all. We’re off to really lovely cottage tomorrow which we’ve stayed in before. It’s £375 for the entire week.

How is £400 pretty cheap? Lucky you!
Weekendfromhellll · 18/03/2022 21:54

I booked through hoseasons. I didn’t even think to look at the map because from the photos it looked really secluded with loads of greenery. Massive mistake and won’t be making it again. I’ve taken pictures, the walls are disgusting and covered in stains so I’ve taken photos of that. There’s some weird red sticky stuff all over one radiator.. possibly an old drink spillage? I’ve taken photos and have asked the owner whether they received my voicemail but suddenly my message isn’t delivering...

Take a screenshot of the message not delivering as well. Then write to the third party booking agent and attach the screenshot. Say that the agent advised you to contact owner but since the owner has not responded or blocked you, there is no way to resolve the issues while you are there.

Then I would leave or goto a travel lodge then demand a full refund.

Brefugee · 18/03/2022 21:59

photos of everything, and a film and email them immediately to Hoseasons and the owner. That's appalling. But don't forget to email so you get them timestamped
