New Mirena coil - first period in 12 years!

Hi all,

Posting here for traffic as hoping someone else will have experienced similar.

I had my Mirena coil changed yesterday. Due to a complicated set of circumstances it had been in situ for 12 years. Easy removal and insertion of new one. Great.

When I had my first Mirena inserted it stopped my periods dead. The Depo injection has the same effect, incidentally. No spotting, nothing.

Today I’m bleeding, dark blackish blood. Quite small amounts, far less than a normal period. I’m not unwell, very slight cramping but not bad enough for painkillers and no temperature.

Is this normal? It’s taken me by surprise as I never bled when the first one was put in. Am I likely to be having periods now on this coil?

I’m assuming I don’t need to be worried as I’m not in severe pain and have no other symptoms? I know the Mirena can cause spotting etc but I wrongly assumed that as I’d had one for years with no periods, the same would continue,

Anyone gone from zero periods to light bleeding? Should I be worried or not?

Very grateful for any words of wisdom.

I think it's fairly normal to have some bleeding right after insertion and isn't necessarily a period starting. Disconcerting when you've not had one for 12 years though! Give it a few days to settle then I imagine you'll be back to what's normal for you.

Weirdly my periods started on my 3rd coil! The first 2 - no periods at all. Since this 3rd one I get 2-3 days of incredibly light (barely even need a panty liner) dark stuff, every 23-27 days. No idea why it's different this time around, but it was changed about 3 years ago and has carried on since then!

I had mine changed recently (second one) - I've now got periods again, having had none at all with my first Mirena.

They're much lighter and shorter, but definitely there - I was also slightly disconcerted!

Oh I've just spotted you had it changed yesterday - this is more likely to be from the fitting of the coil itself, I think?

Aah thank you all, that’s reassuring!

It just took me completely by surprise and I didn’t know whether I should be concerned or not.

I don’t know whether it’s an actual period or just due to the fitting but I guess time will tell!!

Due to the length of time my last coil was in, I’m guessing that the progesterone had worn off so it’s very possible that there will be some effects of me now getting a dose of it. Maybe that’s something to do with the bleeding?? I have no idea!

Either way I won’t worry now - much appreciated.
