What would you write?

I'm in Ireland and I am currently completing the Census form. At the end of the form is a space for a hand written message. This message will be kept confidential for 100 years and then future generations can read it.

AIBU to ask you what would you write?

It can be a deep quote, a joke, a sage piece of advice, a description of what life is like right now....

My great grandchildren will be reading this (hopefully)

Not at all relevant but I collect antique postcards related to a place I live near. My favourite one is someone thanking her aunt for a coal scuttle and how delighted she is with it - posted in 1906!

You could do "A day in the life" so your descendants and future researchers could see what daily life was like for someone of your age, sex, profession in April 2022.
I might do something like that I think, just have to remember to explain what things are because if the YouTube videos of teenagers and dial phones are anything to go by "read a chapter on my Kindle" could be a big mystery Grin

Persephoned · 14/03/2022 20:48

Ah, that’s great. I would write how I’m feeling, in that moment, and why.

phishy · 14/03/2022 20:48

“Sorry for giving your Earth a tax bill that will wipe it out”.

EarringsandLipstick · 14/03/2022 20:52

@Poptart4

Why are you completing it now, rather than on Census Night? I guess some parts won't change but the direction is to wait until that might.

Anyway back to the question - I think I will write about what's happening with me & family that day.

Because absolutely nothing will change in my household between now and April 3rd.

We haven't got our form yet. I'm not sure what to write, I'm thinking of nominating adult DS who still lives at home to do it.

@Poptart4 can I ask you, because we were wondering in our house just yesterday, whether the section for a message is open on the form or is there a way of sealing it closed? In other words, is the message private or not? I'm not asking for any dodgy reasons, just wondering as the census enumerator here is a friend of mine and I wouldn't want her to read it!

Cottagepieandpeas · 14/03/2022 21:12

What a lovely idea.

I think I'd write about what my life / the world was like on census day.

OP I think it's quite a big claim to say that nothing will change in your household between now and April 3rd!

Poptart4 · 14/03/2022 21:12

@DramaAlpaca it's open, no way of hiding it I'm afraid.

OP posts:
StrongerOrWeaker · 14/03/2022 21:16

I'd talk about recent world events and how I feel about them: covid, Ukraine etc

Probably! But not definitely...

Still I guess you could amend / not submit it it did.

DramaAlpaca · 14/03/2022 21:19

Thanks @Poptart4 Smile

NashvilleQueen · 14/03/2022 21:22

Usually you're allowed to complete early if you're sure that there won't be anyone else staying in the house on the actual night.

ChoiceMummy · 15/03/2022 09:01

How lovely. Beautiful.

MrsMinge · 15/03/2022 09:16

I'd write something about my everyday life. Something so natural to you it may seem boring but it's fascinating to read about how things have changed years later

Momicrone · 15/03/2022 09:21

You could begin with something like, - 'if you're reading this, it means we didn't destroy the planet after all, which is a good thing.....'

NaomhPadraigin · 15/03/2022 09:24

I usually start filling it out early, just because it's so long, but finish it on the night.
The section OP is talking about surely it doesn't matter when you complete it as it's your thoughts/ feelings/ advice etc... rather than how many people were in your house in that night?
I know a few people who have taken in, or will soon take in Ukrainian refugees - I guess that could be a big change you don't anticipate?
The world feels so fucked up right now, I'm not sure what to write.

WouldIwasShookspeared · 15/03/2022 09:26

Sorry that we fucked up the planet.
