Posting again as still struggling

Sorry for the swearing- just a bit fed up of it!

I’ve got a mouth ulcer that won’t seem to heal after 10 days. I’ve tried bonjela and all the usuals but it hasn’t improved it at all.

It started out with a lump which came on very suddenly (I hadn’t bitten my lip) and was about a cm in size. The entire area was numb and I could pinch the outside skin without feeling it. It felt like I had gotten a local anaesthetic injection at the dentist! The big lump calmed down over the next day or so and left behind a mouth ulcer which is only about half a cm in size but it’s really uncomfortable and I’m aware of it. I don’t know why it’s not healing but any advice would be appreciated. It’s a red/purple colour in the centre if that makes any difference.

I wondered if the lack of healing was the ulcer catching on food or I was biting it accidentally and that’s why it wasn’t healing but I’m not and it’s not positioned in a place where I eat so it’s not catching on food.

The only reason I’m a bit concerned is that I’m waiting a root canal and have an infected tooth root, although that’s on the other side of my mouth and is an upper tooth whereas this is on the other side of my mouth and is lower so probably unlikely to be related. Just a bit worried in case it’s because of that!

It won't be related to your other tooth but the numbness sounds a bit worrying. Have you seen your dentist? It could be something like a mucocele which might need attention.

TheVolturi · 14/03/2022 20:28

I had one a few weeks ago that was still there when I went to the dentist for a checkup. She actually said to me if it didn't clear on a few days then go back.
Have you tried Anbesol liquid?

Kitkat151 · 14/03/2022 20:30

Gel lair is amazing stuff

Kitkat151 · 14/03/2022 20:30

Gelclair even

Tittyfilarious · 14/03/2022 20:30

Mouth ulcers are normally a whitish/ yellow pit I've not known them to be red/ purple, it might be worth getting it looked at by the dentist or a walk in centre

Tittyfilarious · 14/03/2022 20:30

Also igloo is quite good to help with pain

Arucanafeather · 14/03/2022 20:34

I would agree with pp. this needs to be checked by a dentist. Ulcers that don’t heal need to be investigated. Having said that, I have on occasion has enormous ulcers that take a long time to heal. I happened to be seeing dentist about something else when I had one and they were much more bothered by my enormous ulcer. Took photos of it and insisted I booked back in to get it checked out but could cancel the appointment if it had completely gone. Always best to err on the side of caution with these things and get them checked.

Ah that’s great it’s not related to the infection! That was my big concern. I had awful pain across my cheek, jaw and ear and had a couple of courses of antibiotics to get it under control to buy time until the RCT- I didn’t think it could have spread but I was a bit worried just in case! Big relief it’s unrelated Smile I’ve not been able to see my dentist yet unfortunately.

It’s not badly numb anymore thankfully it was only on the first day when it started and was a bigger lump. It honestly felt like I had an injection and I couldn’t feel anything! That eased off after a few days

I’ll try and post a picture below as my explanation is rubbish sorry!!

Scored out my teeth just in case anyone recognises me from them WinkGrin
So these 2 photos were when it first started and was a bigger lump and the area was numb. It doesn’t look bad in the photos but it was hard to pick it up with the lightening etc

And this is it now. Again, sorry, the lighting made it hard for the purple colour to show up!

Hmmm I'm often plagued with mouth ulcers but they're are smaller and white-ish in colour. Quite different looking to yours. Have you had mouth ulcers before?

Stroppypeople · 14/03/2022 20:48

If it hasn’t improved by next week I would speak to GP .

inheritancetrack · 14/03/2022 20:52

It doesn't look like an ulcer. make a dental appointment.

inheritancetrack · 14/03/2022 20:53

@Stroppypeople

Not GP. They know nothing about what goes on in the mouth, its a dentist you need.
Tittyfilarious · 14/03/2022 21:02

I've not seen a mouth ulcer like that op that looks like a fluid filled lump more than an ulcer

Kitkat151 · 14/03/2022 21:03

@Stroppypeople

If it hasn’t improved by next week I would speak to GP .
And the GP will say.....go to the dentist🙄
Sleepyteach · 14/03/2022 21:05

I had an ulcer that wouldn’t heal and I swapped to an SLS free toothpaste and it was gone in a couple of days

freeingNora · 14/03/2022 21:17

That looks like oral herpes or something similar it's the blister that's not an ulcer I've ever seen it needs checking out straight away don't wait

Arucanafeather · 14/03/2022 21:19

Agree. Doesn’t look like a typical ulcer to me. I’d be calling dentist first thing in morning asking for emergency same day appointment.

Asparaguspatchkid · 14/03/2022 21:22

Order some orabase paste online and use it overnight. You need to totally dry the area with a cotton pad, then apply the paste. Your lip will stick to your gum, but it will be so much better in the morning.

In the meantime I find applying some bicarb soda helps overnight.

I used to get them a lot, but switched to nom-whitening toothpaste and almost never get them now.

MillyMollyMardy · 14/03/2022 21:24

Dentist here, it looks like a mucocele. Usually caused by a blocked salivary gland. I'd always recommend you get your dentist to look at it as I'm just a stranger on the internet.
If you tell the receptionist you have had a lump that isn't going away they should offer you an assessment.

Mrspimplepopper · 14/03/2022 21:25

That's not an ulcer, looks like a mucoseale

YouShouldGoAndLoveYourself · 14/03/2022 21:41

It’s not an ulcer it’s a mucocele.
Don’t ring your GP!

I get small ones often, I pop them and then have a mouth ulcer that takes a week to heal.

Your dentist probably has better advice.

VestaTilley · 14/03/2022 22:01

YANBU, they’re the worst.

People with crap immune systems, eg autoimmune diseases are more prone to them. Do you have one? May be worth getting blood tests.

I’m coeliac and get ulcers fairly regularly. I think eating plain natural yoghurt helps a bit, and gargling with salt water, and using bonjela. If no improvement within a week definitely go to GP, as with the dental treatment you need it could get very nasty.

Mouthulcerwontheal · 15/03/2022 21:57

Just googled mucoceles and it definitely seems like it’s that! Big relief as it seems to be self resolving and harmless

Is there anyway I can speed up getting it gone? Bit fed up with it now and it’s really annoying!
