Email message confusion

Harvestofthesun · 14/03/2022 18:51

If you received an email written with a comment surrounded with full stops, like this:

Name ……….I adjusted the schedule …….. I’ll take a look when I get five minutes.

What does it mean? AIBU for thinking they are signs of frustration?

Was this a work email?

I'd think they didn't understand how to communicate in the workplace or construct a proper sentence tbh.

Harvestofthesun · 14/03/2022 18:59

Yes a work email. I’ve googled it and it seems it’s overuse of an ellipsis. Any grammar experts help me out?

I agree with pp - poor communication skills and no idea how to punctuate an ellipsis would be my first thoughts.

The tone seems arrogant - 'I'm such a busy, important person, how dare you bother me with your trivial request'

But I'd need context and to know what the person was like before judging.

Spot on Clarice. This is an older colleague who is way too important for me to be asking questions of. Except he’s not.

Is it common for this person to send emails like this? It would make me roll my eyes and feel vaguely irritated if it’s a regular thing. Is it possible it was sent by dictation and that’s how it translated? (Grasping at straws lol)

Hadalifeonce · 14/03/2022 19:02

Could it be they are just separating the answers to different questions on a clumsy way?

bonfireheart · 14/03/2022 19:03

My manager sends every email like this, it's her (annoying) writing style that she always uses.

ClariceQuiff · 14/03/2022 19:03

it’s overuse of an ellipsis

An ellipsis should be used either to indicate that words have been missed out in a quotation, e.g.

'I’ve googled it and ... it’s overuse of an ellipsis'

Or it can be used to indicate an unfinished sentence or disjointed style of speech. Neither is really appropriate in this email. It's traditionally written as three dots.

Harvestofthesun · 14/03/2022 19:03

He does it regularly, but the dots are usually only one set. Like this:

Name ……. I’ll take a look later.

I’ve just seen your update, is it possible for you to feed that back to someone further up the food chain? No need for it especially if it’s intended to make you feel crap.

Harvestofthesun · 14/03/2022 19:05

I think it’s his style of writing but fear he’s annoyed at me for asking this valid question.
He often excludes me from conversations/emails that I need to know for my job.

OP posts:
Fernsinthegarden · 14/03/2022 19:12

In which case I’d definitely try to resolve this by whatever means. It isn’t the best use of your time chasing up information you should be been party to from the beginning! Would an email addressing this directly work?

LizzieMacQueen · 14/03/2022 19:14

Is it not just a pause in his speech, as it were. How does he actually talk? Are there lots of pauses, erms and ahs?

merryhouse · 14/03/2022 19:19

This particular annoying habit appears to be simply instead of using paragraph breaks:

Sally

I adjusted the schedule.

I'll take a look later.

John

I suspect you're reading more into it because of his rather more concerning habit of leaving you out of the loop.

Harvestofthesun · 14/03/2022 19:22

Yes thank you, I am possibly reading more into it. It’s a daily challenge, he’s an older man who has never had to work with a female in my role who’s asking questions. My boss is happy with my work, I think this colleague feels threatened although he shouldn’t because we have different roles and I’m not interested in his. Our roles cross over occasionally and he makes life a little difficult when they do.
Thanks for your comments.

One of my friends writes everything like this. It completely changes the meaning of everything she writes. She's French.

Isitactuallyme · 14/03/2022 19:28

Could they be writing on a phone so they think they are putting in line breaks

But it is coming up as ellipses

Like this?

BorisBooster · 14/03/2022 19:31

Reply back asking if there an issue with his keyboard 🤣

purplewolfie · 14/03/2022 20:09

I write like this sometimes....I think of it like a pause. Didn't realise others might find it annoying.........

Hankunamatata · 14/03/2022 20:12

I always think of it as a pause
Terry told me June was having an affair with sarah and I was like.............

YeOldeTrout · 14/03/2022 21:12
