To wonder what on Earth this kitchen utensil is?

I was given a load of kitchen stuff and have found one thing that I’ve never seen before and I’m embarrassed to ask what it is. Does anyone know? The ‘blade’ things are blunt rather than sharp so it’s not for cutting anything.

It’s a butter cutter, to use when mixing butter and flour together. It’s very good at the job!

PollyGray · 13/03/2022 08:03

Is it a slicer for onions or potatoes?

CruCru · 13/03/2022 08:03

Hmm. Is it an egg slicer?

Gatekeeper · 13/03/2022 08:03

Pastry maker, you rub fat into flour by holding it upright and pressing down in the bowl

AmIDoingThisRight · 13/03/2022 08:04

It's for making pastry, to 'cut' the butter into the flour.

I think @Haggisfish3 has it. Butter cutter, great word. 😂

oviraptor21 · 13/03/2022 08:04

It's for making pastry or crumble toppings. Where it says rub the butter into the flour - that's what you use it for. Takes me right back!

Whatisthisthing87 · 13/03/2022 08:04

Thanks everyone for your help!

It's a pastry cutter. Used to mix butter with flour at the start of the process. If you do a lot of baking then it's very useful!

RampantIvy · 13/03/2022 08:05

It's for making pastry. You use it instead of rubbing butter into flour with your fingers. My mum had one. She called it her knuckle duster Grin

Agree with HaggisFish, my mother used to have one. Handy for making pastry without having to handle it
CrustyCrackers · 13/03/2022 08:05

I want one!

LegArmpits · 13/03/2022 08:24

I knew it was going to be one of these before j saw the picture! They're very handy indeed.

thegcatsmother · 13/03/2022 09:32

Brilliant for doing pastry or crumbles on the days your fingers aren't up to the job.

NiLunNiLautre · 13/03/2022 09:35

Had never seen one before, but now think I need one!

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 13/03/2022 09:37

I need one of those! My hands are too hot to make pastry and melt the butter - even if it and the bowl are frozen to start with.

ThinWomansBrain · 13/03/2022 09:38

I googled pastry maker - lots of options from about £3

geminiflanagan · 13/03/2022 09:44

I love mine. I make shit pastry and crumble without it, hot hands.

Particularly good for scones as well, I cut everything together and then just pat into a round and cut into triangles. No gentle kneading, no rolling. My scones are massive.

TroysMammy · 13/03/2022 09:47

I make my pastry in my food processor.

Baaaa · 13/03/2022 09:50

Ooh I want one!

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 13/03/2022 09:52

I'd love one of those! Didn't even know they existed.

I struggle rubbing-in sometimes, when the butter is very hard.
