Is watching soaps working class?

Just as I say really. I'm an avid soap watcher, grew up very poor and on benefits, now comfortable and in a job where there are a lot of middle class people. At work someone said this as a sort of barbed joke but a lot of people agreed . What do you think?

Guess I’m middle class and I’ve never watched soaps. Nobody in my friendship circle does and never heard anyone at work talk about soaps.

TheHoptimist · 12/03/2022 22:36

yes probably, watching TV generally is more wc.

But listening to The Archers is very MC

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/03/2022 22:37

Hmm no idea

Tanfastic · 12/03/2022 22:38

I don't think as many people on general watch soaps as much as they used to in past years. Most people I know watch Netflix or Prime most of the time.

I watch Emmerdale. I'd describe myself as working class.

Flyonthewall01 · 12/03/2022 22:39

Never really thought about it but yes I think it probably is but if you enjoy it then watch it. Life’s too short to care

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 12/03/2022 22:39

Someone is probably googling to see if Nancy Mitford had an opinion on soap operas. They'll be with you shortly.

MushroomHunter · 12/03/2022 22:40

Yes it is very wc, but if it’s what you like who cares!

PourSomeLove · 12/03/2022 22:40

No idea. But I’m loving Home and Away at the moment and can’t stand any other soaps, I wonder what class that makes me. 🤔 I think it just means I fancy Tane 😂

WTF475878237NC · 12/03/2022 22:40

Never thought about it before but I grew up watching EastEnders. I suppose we were interested in watching the dramatised lives of people we could relate to. I think this is in contrast to modern scripted reality where people watch the dramatised lives of people in totally different social strata.

I grew up middle class and I watch Corrie and EE. I enjoy them and it's not doing anyone any harm. All my housemates watched EE when I was at uni and they were all middle class (and much posher than me).

Your colleagues sound a bit snobby tbh.

ilovesooty · 12/03/2022 22:41

Who cares?

CaMePlaitPas · 12/03/2022 22:42

No, what makes you working class is getting up in the morning and working for a living. If you like soaps you carry on watching them and never mind your colleague's dull, lazy attempt at humour.

RaininSummer · 12/03/2022 22:43

A little I think as if you don't have much money maybe you are more likely to watch a lot of TV in general as cheap entertainment.

Moodycow78 · 12/03/2022 22:44

Yes

Mushrooms0up · 12/03/2022 22:44

It probably is, I grew up watching soaps and from a working class background.

I’m now probably middle class and don’t watch it and I don’t think anyone at my ‘middle class’ work does either, or at least it’s not a topic of conversation.

I’m not sure though if in general people just watch soaps less now anyway

Chocolattay · 12/03/2022 22:45

I’d say an age thing rather than class nowadays. All my elderly relatives love soaps.

crochetmonkey74 · 12/03/2022 22:46

Yes there definitely is a snobbishness. I'm actually quite clever and interested in lots of different books/films/TV etc but I also love soaps. At work everyone seems to just talk about scandi dramas, university challenge, only connect and newsnight as the only acceptable telly. They have similar views when I say I like certain books. It's very odd

Chocolattay · 12/03/2022 22:47

I also think probably watching the likes of Emmerdale is considered more classy than watching the likes of Eastenders.

ClariceQuiff · 12/03/2022 22:47

I once read that the Queen is a fan of Coronation Street .

crochetmonkey74 · 12/03/2022 22:47

@ilovesooty

Who cares?
I dont care, I was just interested what you all thought. It wont change my habits. I really enjoy soaps

Still don't understand the preoccupation of MN with class. It ultimately doesn't matter if it is or isn't.

GrandTheftWalrus · 12/03/2022 22:49

I'm very poor and have started watching emmerdale and coronation Street. Mainly because I'd watch the chase then the news and by the time the news ended I was getting my 5yo ready for bed so I'd watch it

This isnt a preoccupation of MN, this was people at work who said it, I wanted to see what people on here thought about it

My parents are soap snobs who are obsessed with Corrie and Emmerdale but consider Eastenders chavvy.

They are working class btw, but not ‘chavvy’.
