I'm so sorry to post this here but I got no replies in the correct topic so posting here for traffic.

Hi all!

Has anyone's child suffered a sprained ankle and refused to put weight on it? How long did it take for recovery?

My son 2.5 slipped on a toy at child care and went over on his ankle. We took him to a&e for an X-ray which came back clear but he won't put weight on it yet. It's been 2 days!

He's happy in himself and crawling around and pulling himself up on things but not walking

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thank you!

My dd hurt her ankle on a trampoline when she was two and refused to put weight on it.

X-ray initially said all clear, but later on found a tiny hairline fracture. Bad enough that she was limping for about a week but not so bad that it needed casting.

So about a week

Thank you!! Do you think a second X-ray would be wise?

You can try. Asked for a second one but they reviewed the first and that’s when the doctor saw the fracture.

I see thank you!!

Hope your little one is ok and it is just a sprain. They bounce back very quickly

When I’ve sprained my ankle it’s been far longer than 2 days before I could comfortably bear weight on it, but as an adult crawling isn’t seen as acceptable! So I’ve hobbled and hopped and sometimes used crutches. Unless you were told he would be bearing weight again within a couple of days I think his behaviour is quite sensible.

Hi op I'm a childrens physio
Was the a&e department a specialist childrens one?

tobypercy · 12/03/2022 14:35

my DS sprained his ankle age 2. Stayed off it for a week or so - even at that age they remember that it's sore so they try to avoid it.

He was fine after a week or 2.

ivfbabymomma1 · 12/03/2022 14:40

@physwizz yes it was ☺️

Thank you everyone your right 2 days isn't very long!

There is a small bruise around his ankle but the doctor rotated it and put pressure on it and he didn't wince so hopefully within a week he'll be ok! He's either walking on his knees or crawling! He also climbed onto a chair for his breakfast but only using the one foot

That's good Smile

Takes about 6 weeks for soft tissue to heal and sometimes sprains can be as sore as a break.

Hope he gets back on his feet very soon. In the meantime you could try a few games involving feet and tickling toes/massage etc whatever he can tolerate to keep it from getting stiff and to build his confidence again

@physwizz thank you so much I will do that!!! Really appreciate the advice!

Hi all,
My daughter sprained her ankle 23rd march
Went to A&E had an x-ray and came back clear
I'm Tring to encourage her to walk/stand. She stands for for a second but then she crys and sits down.

It's will have been 2 weeks on the 6th April
I'm just worried and just wondering if anyone else has had this experience and how long does it take for the ankle to heal and when will she walk again.

Thank you

Hi I was just reading your post.
First of all I hope your son is ok and is better
My daughter 1.5 and on 23rd march she sprained her ankle we took her to a@e and had x-ray and come back clear. I have tried to encourage her to walk and stand but when she does try and stand she has to hold on to something for a radiator, table or me but only for a second then she crys and sits back down.
I'm just trying to look for advice from someone that's been through the same experience as I'm so worried and just looking for help.
Thank you
