Hey all, so I have applied for a job and I received an email from the HR manager saying they are very interested in having an introductory call with me - "this will be an informal discussion on the phone and it will be a chance to explore your experience in more detail and go through the role requirements"

Great I thought, and I emailed back to arrange the call.

The next day, they emailed me again to say they had covid and therefore wouldn't be able to talk on the phone this week, so they are arranging a pre-interview to take place on a video platform (hirevue) - basically I click the link and get questions and have to record myself answering the questions and then submit.

I'm still interested in the role but.. AIBU that I find this annoying and almost.. rude? I thought it was just an informal chat to talk about myself and also find out more about the role, I would be able to build a rapport with the hiring manager, answer their questions and also ask questions myself, and now it's a pre recorded video interview / pre-Interview. The job advert hasn't even specified the salary or other benefits and now I won't have the chance to ask this because I'm going to be speaking to a computer.

Yea I would hate this so much. It's so just not a good way to introduce a potential employee to a company Hmm

If they have Covid they will be off for a week potentially not fit for work. They may have 20 pre-interviews planned for the week. Getting the first interview done means they won’t screw around with their time scales. If you don’t pass the first interview making a connection won’t matter. I’ve made connections with people on first interview, our director has made connections on the pre interview but these people went on to fail other parts of the interview process and as much as I liked them they didn’t get the job.

It depends on how much you need/want the job. Personally, if I was in a position to I’d push back. Interviews are a two way street and this approach would be a massive turn off for me.
