To think it should have been cleaned?!

Name changed because I posted about this on my insta.

I bought a table and chairs from Facebook market place yesterday. It smelt quite strongly of dog which was annoying but I can’t reasonably get upset about them having a dog.

We put it in the garage to see if it aired out a bit because we didn’t want it to make our house smell. I went in the garage this evening and it absolutely STANK still of wet dog.

Decided to give it a clean in the garage (was going to when it was in situ anyway) and I COULD NOT BELIEVE how filthy it was. I poured 5 disgusting bowls of water down the sink and my cloth was black after just wiping over the seat.

I just cannot think that this table has ever been cleaned. It wasn’t in storage either, it was just in her living room.

AIBU to think the seller really should have cleaned it before giving it to me and would IBU to send her a message saying how disgusting it was?

Personally, I think people should clean stuff before selling/donating it. I can't stand those posts that say "could do with a wipe". So wipe it then!

Facebook market place stuff is usually grubby ime. But it’s not nice. Stuff from freecycle is usually clean.
Vinegar and water is good for cleaning wooden furniture

Did the house look dirty and smell if so you should have walked away? Are you happy with it now if not just put it down to experience.Hope you didn’t pay much for it.No point in telling her she won’t care..

I might do that tomorrow. Half a bottle of Cif this evening 😂

I am not sure I absolutely understand how a table (presumably made of wood?) and chairs (presumably wooden dining chairs with maybe a padded cushion?) could smell that badly of dog. Unless the dog slept on the table or something.

Are you sure you’re not being a bit dramatic?

FB marketplace items are sold as seen so if it was particularly whiffy (woofy?) you should have walked away then

I didn’t see inside, she had taken it apart and put it in the hall. It did smell but I figured it was just the dog and maybe doggy people don’t notice (we are quite anti-dog in our household).

I think it’s going to be good when we get it in. It is solid wood and we couldn’t fork out for a solid wood one new at the moment!

Its is gross, I always clean stuff before selling it. However the whole point of Facebook compared to Ebay is that you collect it so you get to check it out before taking it away

Me either! There is no upholstery on it at all I really didn’t know wood could absorb dog smell. You are possible right but I figured the smell was just coming from her flat

Yanbu. I'm also quite anti dog and often astonished by how oblivious some doggy people are about how stinky their stuff is. I hate the smell of wet dog!

I love my in laws but their spaniels pant and fart in their overheated living room all evening and sometimes I just can't breathe when I'm there! They feed them all kinds of indigestible food like cookie dough and cornflakes in milk so their breath and farts smell toxic. Ugh. Call me Cruella de Vil

JulesJoules · 09/03/2022 21:32

I think smells from the air as stick to anything. My recently retired colleague returned her WFH laptop and it absolutely stinks still, it’s not dog, just stale cooking/non aired horribleness.

WomanStanleyWoman · 09/03/2022 21:44

Surely you saw it before taking it away? If you genuinely ‘COULD NOT BELIEVE how filthy it was’, you can’t have only realised once you got it home.

You got a solid wood table for a good price. You saw the goods; you chose to pay for the goods. Why the Instawhinging now?

surreygirl1987 · 09/03/2022 21:51

Well it is gross but also it is second hand. Did she say it was clean when you were messaging? I always ask for confirmation of the state it is in when arranging to buy.

Helenahandkart · 09/03/2022 22:04

If she’s been living with something that filthy in her living room then I would guess that she doesn’t have any appreciation of how to clean something, so even if she had cleaned it before giving it to you it still would not have met your standard of cleanliness.
She’s clearly a dirty person, but I would always expect to have to clean something I’d bought second hand, even if it didn’t look dirty. You don’t know where it’s been.
