To go to the cinema on my own?

I'm in my 40's and in all those years I don't think I've ever gone to the cinema on my own. I don't know why, I've just never done it and I know some people think it's a bit odd. So anyway this weekend I've got a few hours to kill while I wait around for my son during an activity of his and I've booked myself a cinema ticket and I'm really excited about it for some unknown reason (I guess at my age there's not a lot of "firsts" left in ordinary life)

So....

YABU - Going to the cinema alone is sad and lonely
YANBU - Going to the cinema alone is peaceful and therapeutic

Omg it’s so weird and lonely and sad!

Not really, it is one of life’s little pleasures. No one will notice, buy an enormous popcorn and get a really good seat and enjoy it, I love the cinema on my own

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 09/03/2022 16:08

I did it once, kind of, I didn't want to see the same movie as my friends so I went to a different one. I devoured my way through my snacks solo and had such a lovely time. I'd love to do it again. I think I may have done it again for baby cinema but it's not the same- fewer snacks.

OhMygodddd · 09/03/2022 16:09

I went for the first time by myself ever just recently.

Found it ok actually!

femfemlicious · 09/03/2022 16:09

I love going alone and sitting far from everyoneGrin

CookPassBabtridge · 09/03/2022 16:10

Of course it's okay! I don't understand people who can't do things alone Confused

AryaStarkWolf · 09/03/2022 16:10

@ShirleyPhallus @Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov I think the "eating snacks on my own in the dark" part is the most alluring part Grin

Ooh I love going to the cinema alone, and it's something that rarely happens!

I used to go on a Friday afternoon at uni, then when I was about 36 I got a job where I had Friday afternoons off and several times used it to go solo to the cinema.....it's genuinely one of life's great pleasures!

MaryAndHerNet · 09/03/2022 16:11

I prefer to go on my own, early in the AM before the scummy mouth breathers and popcorn crunchers turn up.

I can do things alone, I enjoy my own company very much, it's just weirdly something I never thought about doing on my own for some reason

I love going to the cinema on my own. Can watch what I want at a time that suits me. It’s not like you can really have a conversation with anyone while the film is showing anyway.

Whatevernext1 · 09/03/2022 16:12

I much prefer going to the cinema on my own! I have a limitless pass and will watch multiple films in one day if I have the chance!
Have a lovely time and enjoy the film 🙂

LaTangerina · 09/03/2022 16:12

Going to the cinema alone is great, go for it! Hope you enjoy your movie.

onemouseplace · 09/03/2022 16:13

I love going to the cinema on my own!

I had one too many experiences of missing a film at the cinema as my friends were rubbish to organise, so just went on my own one day and never looked back.

Yes it will be an early show, added bonus of less people and less expensive

Lots of people go alone to the cinema!

On Monday I went to see The Duke with a friend - had she not been around I would have gone alone as I've done before.

EBearhug · 09/03/2022 16:15

It's fine. It's not like you can talk to anyone during the film anyway. Our local cinema has gone for luxury seats throughout, which I suspect means there are few options for cinema snogging, as you're too far away from the person you'd be sat next to if you weren't alone. In fact there's little reason to go to the cinema with other people these days.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 09/03/2022 16:15

I do this sometimes. It's not as if you can chat through the whole film, so what difference does it make if you're alone.

I also eat out alone occasionally and on Sunday I sat in a pub with the papers, and had a couple of red wines whilst I waited for my DD to finish work. Fabulous.

MangoBiscuit · 09/03/2022 16:16

When I finally split from my horrible exH, I went to go see a movie on my own. One he wouldn't have sat through with me, therefore one I wouldn't have been allowed to "waste" money on. Hmm It was bloody marvellous and I loved every second.

billy1966 · 09/03/2022 16:17

I used to do it weekly pre children in the afternoon.
I adored it.

Change123today · 09/03/2022 16:17

I had to for some reason wait for my daughter and nearby was a cinema - I thought to kill a couple of hours rather than sitting in the car I’d watch a film.

I surprisingly enough really enjoyed it! & have gone a couple of times on my own since. I don’t know why - bizarrely the peace and quiet ? Even with a film loudly on - no one can find me or annoy me for a bit :)

Cheguevarahamster · 09/03/2022 16:19

Love gong to the cinema on my own. One of life's little pleasures.

I love this, it sounds like it was more than just a trip to the cinema Flowers

I do all the time, four times last week, three times this week, lots of people do.

guineapigs · 09/03/2022 16:21

I don't understand why would you go to cinema with a friend? Very non social way to meet up with friends.

peachgreen · 09/03/2022 16:22

I go on my own regularly, it's great.
