To ask why ordinary people want a high Twitter following?

I'm not a big user of Twitter but use it a bit for work. Zero use Instagram.

Why do people want such a large Twitter following? Can you make money from it as an ordinary person?

I'm don't understand the need?

Because everyone likes to be liked.

CornishGem1975 · 09/03/2022 16:04

I don't think it's necessarily something ordinary people go out to seek but the more followers, the more chat and presumably you're on there because you want to talk to people.

AlmostMaybe · 09/03/2022 16:07

No idea about people but my dogs have a high twitter following. They just want to be appreciated and have their awesomeness recognised. 😂

girlmom21 · 09/03/2022 16:11

People want to feel like their opinion matters.

Fair enough

I suppose it constitutes 'importance' within the SM world.

See, I do mumsnet as I get genuine feedback which can be helpful or brutal or insightful

But Twitter just seems more about attention than discussion

Is it a craving for attention? To have a following?

OP posts:
Roussette · 09/03/2022 18:12

Nope. Not craving attention at all. I've been on Twitter 5 years, I have 2,500 followers and I follow slightly more.
It's just interesting to see others opinions, and I s'pose they are interested in mine, no idea!

I don't trawl for followers, it just happened over years.

And can I ask if there is a pattern to your followers? A mutual hobby or viewpoint
OP posts:
BirdOnTheWire · 09/03/2022 19:36

I use twitter for mutual interests, so the more followers you have the more stuff you get to see. There are whole areas of Twitter that are not the usual self absorbed SM stuff (I loathe Instagram).
Gardening and sheep farming are two of the things I follow.Grin

A580Hojas · 09/03/2022 19:40

I don't actually understand what Twitter is for unless you're a celebrity to whom the vaccuous issue of number of followers is important.

AlmostMaybe · 09/03/2022 19:48

Yes, as well as my dogs having an account which is just a bit of fun, I have 2 accounts that are mine. One is all about a band that I’m a fan of, so we all follow each other to share concert clips, photos and info. The other is to do with animal rights and veganism. You soon get lots of followers as everyone in the ‘communities’ follows everyone else.

Roussette · 09/03/2022 19:56

Course you can ask!

I joined when Trump became a POTUS candidate. And mostly it's political on my feed, world, US, UK etc. With a few other niche interests of mine

To those who call it vacuous... I follow a lot of news feeds and it's worthwhile in these days and times.

I don't care how many followers I have, it just happened over years. A few famous ppl (very random ones, you'd laugh if I told you who!) have liked my tweets or retweeted them, that then gets followers I suppose. I'm pretty amateur on there!

AdaShelby · 09/03/2022 19:58

I'm an online content moderator and if someone has 10k plus followers and complain about a company and @them, we need to escalate it quickly. And less and the companies don't give a fuck

Roussette · 09/03/2022 20:02

Oh yes! It's very useful for that. I can email a Company and get no reply. I can tweet them and they are back to me very quickly!
(Not that I'm doing that regularly, but there has been a couple of occasions)

ufucoffee · 09/03/2022 20:02

But if they *@them* doesn't that mean anyone who follows the company will get to see the complaint even if they poster only has a few hundred followers?
AdaShelby · 09/03/2022 20:16

If they @them yes everyone sees it but the magic number is 10k. Once you have that many followers the companies take action to shut you up

Roussette · 09/03/2022 20:20

They've taken action to shut me up! I have had some good results. One was on behalf of my DD who was stuck abroad, long story, but she ended up in a newspaper article. It worked. Phone calls and emails didn't.

Oh so you can have more than one account! That's normal?

OP posts:
Sexnotgender · 09/03/2022 20:34

I’ve got nearly 5,000 followers. I’ve been on the platform for a few years and it just builds up over time. No concerted effort to “gain” followers, it just happens.

Roussette · 09/03/2022 20:53

Sexnotgender

Ditto. It just happens I agree. I did have one tweet that just took off... it was a sight to behold... literally thousands of likes and retweets. I'm glad I don't have that regularly. But followers increased after that.

lljkk · 09/03/2022 21:02

Some ppl are convinced they know best how to run the world.

I've got ~250 followers. Must say I don't know who most of them are.
I hope I provide good value!

AlmostMaybe · 09/03/2022 21:38

I’m not sure if I’m normal. 😂 But I think people must. Lots of people who like the band my one account is dedicated to would probably not want to see my vegan recipes and animal activist stuff😬 And actually I have another account, much smaller and we follow a band that is ‘up and coming’. There’s only a few hundred of us but we all follow each other including the band themselves. So I have 3 accounts and my dogs have 1. 😂 I don’t think that is normal actually. 🤣 I’ve got to know some nice people on there from all over the world. It’s not all bad on there.
