Does anybody else really struggle in this cold

I'm in the North West. Even though it's now March, it still feels like January, I really struggle to be outside and even with a thick coat and huge wooly scarf I'm shivering and find the wind unbearably cold.

Was outside today as part of my job and one colleague was in a cardigan and no coat, the other just a jumper and both seemed fine, yet I was shaking.

I'm not even that bothered about rain, it's just the cold. Every year in Dec-March I hate being outside and dream of living abroad, but there are way colder climates than ours. I just feel like I struggle with the cold more than other people sometimes, anyone else have this or know reasons why?
I'm not underweight either and I'm 30.

Is your thyroid 100% ok? I’m hypothyroid and feel cold most of the time ( I might shed a cardigan on a sunny afternoon in July)

Letmetakeaselfie · 08/03/2022 19:35

That's a good point, I can get it checked out, are they even doing such appointments these days in person?

I hate the cold too and live in Northern Scotland. I tend to wear thinner multiple layers rather than one thick jumper if that makes sense. I also have 2 sets of rechargeable hand warmers (one for hands and one for down my boots). I buy a lot of Uniqlo thermals for the winter months too that keep me cosy and I wear wrist warmers. If my ankles, wrists and neck are kept warm I feel better.

ufucoffee · 08/03/2022 19:40

I think you should get your thyroid checked too. I'm the opposite and I'm always amazed when I'm out for a walk in a T-shirt and a thin coat and I see people with hats, gloves and scarves on. I don't think it's been cold this winter. Went out to a couple of pubs and a restaurant last weekend and didn't bother wearing a coat. I'm in the North too.

My DH calls me the lizard. I cannot self warm at all. I usually fight for higher heating but can't at the moment so have bought a heated throw which is absolutely amazing. No use out and about though but I hear you OP. I hate being cold and constantly cold and miserable.

Returnoftheowl · 08/03/2022 19:51

I'm really struggling this year with the cold as well. I've found its even making my teeth painful, which is a new one for me.
I've got an electric throw which I use every evening, but doesn't help during the day.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 08/03/2022 19:53

I feel the cold and there has been a cold wind today but I don't think it's really been that cold.

As a PP said, have you had your thyroid checked?

@Malariahilaria could you please link to the heated throw you bought? I'm considering one for when I work from home as an alternative to the costly electric heater!

Worth checking iron levels too when I was anemic I never felt warm.

UsernameInTheTown · 08/03/2022 19:59

Thermal undies, fleece lined leggings, pure wool jumper, waxed jacket with fleece pile poppered in, wooly headband thing, long boots and gloves. Warm as toast.

gaggiagirl · 08/03/2022 20:02

I'm like this. I'm really struggle to be outside for any length of time as I shake with the cold.
I wear an oodie in the house. Use hot water bottles and cardigans at work. I take a blanket or a hot water bottle to the cinema because I can't sit still for long without freezing.
This week I've bought some real sheepskin insoles to go in my already fleece lined boots. They are nice and snug.

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 08/03/2022 20:04

I absolutely hate it and I struggle massively in the cold. I'm miserable.

SmellyOldOwls · 08/03/2022 20:07

Same I'm trying to do 1000 hours outside with the kids but I can't bear being out in the cold. I'm even cold in the house with the heating on. Hope a heatwave comes before the oil runs out because we can't afford to buy more!

Ponypizzy · 08/03/2022 20:13

I’m in the NW too and it’s bloody freezing today especially in the wind. I took the dog out though after work and it was alright when I got moving. It’s always worse if you are standing relatively still and I agree with PP that layers and thermals are better protection against the cold.

Malariahilaria · 08/03/2022 20:27

www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07FF6B5F9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_i_PG0235XSPZAZKTY3HVKF?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 of course. This the one i have. It's not amazing, heats a bit unevenly but very very warm and cozy, apparently cheap as chips. I'm on teams calls all day wrapped up in it, much happier.

Giggorata · 08/03/2022 20:32

I struggle with the cold too, and find it worse now that I’m 60+. I wake up stiff in the morning and need a hot shower or session with the heated throw to get going and comfortable. It limits my activities, because I huddle miserably on the sofa to reduce surface area and conserve body heat instead of doing something.
Around 4.30 every winter afternoon, I get a dip where I simply can't get warm without the throw, my biorhythm, I suppose.
Dreading having to economise further with the oil, and usually have all the wheezes, like layers and thermals and hot drinks, but don't think I can go any further.
I even wear scarf, fingerless mittens and an ex theatre monk-like hooded fleece garment over my clothes, so I look very strange when answering the door. I can imagine rumours going round the village about the Victorian Satanist on the corner.

AliceAbsolum · 08/03/2022 20:32

Merino wool base layers underneath down outerwear. It's the only way.

Clarabe1 · 08/03/2022 20:36

I am menopausal so love it when it’s cooler!! I echo what others have said about getting your thyroid checked. Also are you underweight? I lost weight through illness and was permanently frozen. Your body fat helps keep you warm. I am not advocating becoming huge but it’s something to look at.

My DH calls me the lizard too. Grin. I'm currently in a thermal vest, t shirt and hoodie with a fleece blanket over me. He is in a short sleeved t shirt!
ChocolateRiver · 08/03/2022 20:47

Op I’m exactly the same and in the NW too. I’m fed of being freezing. I can’t remember the last time I was properly warm. Even if my body is warm, my hands and feet are always cold plus my face. I hate my face being cold but I don’t know how to warm it up.
