Guosto....didn't realise you had to opt out

I realise that I am probably being unreasonable but I tried out Guosto for a few weeks on an intro code given to me by a friend....it was ok but wasn't mad on it. I didn't realise however that if you didn't choose recipes they just automatically chose stuff for you and sent it. I didn't get any alerts or notifications and just got an email this morning saying your box is on its way and will arrive tomorrow. gone into the app and they have chosen two recipe boxes for me, that I wouldn't have gone for I guess because I hadn't put anything in....but why no email notification saying deadline approaching etc....is this how they suck you in? I am super annoyed at myself and gone and cancelled it straight away but find it really sneaky to operate like this.

I haven't had Gousto for years but they definitely reminded me to pick meals, either by email or the app. Have you opted in to emails from Gousto?

Hwory · 07/03/2022 11:43

When I used gusto you get an email and app reminder and it's pretty clear when you sign up that it's a weekly recurring box so I think this is on you OP.

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 07/03/2022 11:45

I think that may have been the problem that I didn't have notifications set on the app but that wasn't intentional, didn't realise you had to opt into emails....

I totally get it is my over sight but I didn't intentionally opt out of emails anywhere so I am not sure how i have managed to get no emails or no reminders on the app....

They normally warn you that you have a couple of days to choose your recipes otherwise they pick them for you.

Odd that you got this email not the others. Check your spam/junk.

But generally speaking if you sign up for a service you should read the T&Cs to understand what you’ve committed to.

I agree OP! I cancelled my Hello Fresh subscription because one week I forgot to choose and they sent me food anyway - I had no notification or a reminder and I was fuming!

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 07/03/2022 11:57

Yes totally as I said it is my fault and I have only been doing this for a few weeks but somehow it wrong footed me as my last delivery was on a Saturday and this one is a Tuesday and I am not sure how I messed this up. They have been very good and offered me a 20% refund which I wasn't expecting and is a very nice gesture.

I had the same - signed up at a wine tasting when I'd had quite a lot of wine !
I know I told them that I needed to choose the food as I've got lots of allergies and they told me that nothing would be sent out until I signed in and chose my first box - not true so ended up getting a box pretty much full of things I can't eat.
They lied, I cancelled and got refunded.

Regularsizedrudy · 07/03/2022 12:07

Of course you have to unsubscribe from a subscription service, that’s on you.

girlmom21 · 07/03/2022 12:09

You have to tick boxes to opt in to marketing emails with pretty much everything now, and almost anything that gives a free trial will automatically enrol you into the full scheme if you don't cancel - hence then asking for bank details

murasaki · 07/03/2022 12:09

I opted out, but can still order the odd meal when I fancy what is on the menu, that works well for us. I keep the recipe cards in a folder and have re made quite a few, it's broadened our go to meal list.

Viviennemary · 07/03/2022 12:11

It's cheeky. No wonder they are always desperately trying to suck new people in with offers.

CourtRand · 07/03/2022 12:11

I get texts and emails every week reminding me

givemeallthecheese · 07/03/2022 12:12

I don't have notifications on the app AND I opted out of marketing emails but I still get the email to remind me I need to choose the meals. So either it's gone into your junk box or there's been a glitch and their system missed you out (in which case that 20% refund is the least they can do!)

OrlandointheWilderness · 07/03/2022 12:14

Bloody love gousto. I'd be lost without it! Yes you have to opt out to skip a box or they will pick for you but it IS made clear it's a subscription service and this is the way it works.

veevee04 · 07/03/2022 12:15

Companies always suck you in like this it's how they make money. Always set a reminder on your phone to cancel on a certain date that's what I do. I was spending loads of subscriptions every month. I only started gousto as I couldn't get a supermarket delivery in the height of the pandemic and needed food.

Rosebell75 · 07/03/2022 12:25

We get Gousto every week and it’s brilliant. Have tried others but now just stick with Gousto and they’ve always been really helpful and quick to sort any issues.

I did mistakenly once forget to cancel as we were going away so they sent a box, before it had arrived I gave them a quick call and they offered to refund me and suggested I could give the box away to friends/relatives etc so not an issue.

Hello Fresh were awful at sorting the issue I had with items missing etc so I wouldn’t use them again (plus you have to reinstate your account before you can look at the menu options properly and it takes a billion steps to cancel again which definitely feels like a con!!)

We tried Gousto during lockdown and thought it was brilliant. Certainly tried several meals we wouldn't have normally.

We don't get them now as we buy similar ingredients and re-use the recipes slightly tweaking if needed.

Would still recommend people to try them.
