I saw this Times article today.

Peter Dundas on surrogacy: ‘People think, oh, same-sex couples — they buy a baby’

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/78526d60-9944-11ec-84fe-a2a0efa555d1?shareToken=5501606db6ab581c591892c53d3e9365

AIBU to find this specific phrase just appalling (screenshot). How can someone GIVE a surrogate - the surrogate is another human being?

I thought exactly the same when I read it. The surrogate is a commodity to him.

Wartywart · 06/03/2022 16:00

Equally as bad is "lend you my nanny" or "lend you my cleaner". As though these people are not humans who have the right to choose what work they do or do not take on.

Gross entitlement.

Carpy899 · 06/03/2022 16:02

Surrogacy where money is traded is hideous imo.

Wavypurple · 06/03/2022 16:04

Disgusting

Clymene · 06/03/2022 16:04

And we were super picky about the woman we had to buy our eggs from!

Yuck. What a repellant women hating pair

EnamelWoman · 06/03/2022 16:06

Awful. I just don't understand why it's legal to buy a baby like this

Skelligsfeathers · 06/03/2022 16:07

The while thing is vile. Nobody is entitled to a baby.
The "being super picky' about egg donors, kim Kardashian wanting to give them her surrogate.

Vile.

Loopytiles · 06/03/2022 16:07

Awful!

scootalooser · 06/03/2022 16:08

Disgusting. I cannot bear the commodification of women in any form.

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 06/03/2022 16:10

Disgusting. 'Tried to give us her surrogate'. Does Kim own this woman!!

Fucking Gilead come true.

DoobryWhatsit · 06/03/2022 16:26

I'm a science tutor. One mum I worked for told me very excitedly one week that she was going to "gift" me to her niece for the next six weeks before her exams. I was very young, and I convinced myself that I was being unreasonable to be upset (because it was the same one hour of the week I would have been teaching for the original woman, and it was no further to travel) but honestly, I died a bit inside.

This here is some next level awful, dehumanising language.

ThatsNotMyGolem · 06/03/2022 16:28

Proper Handmaid's Tale stuff. Dystopian.

Yes, Times coverage on women’s issues is all over the place!

NorthSouthcatlady · 06/03/2022 16:56

Grim. Totally grim

I also doubt it was a gruelling 4 year battle. All they did was throw cash around and have a wank. My 4 year battle to conceive has been way harder and unsuccessful as yet

Kangaruby · 06/03/2022 17:00

The times despite being mostly good on women's rights is shockingly pro surrogacy (especially the style section, possibly due to their writer who had a column about her surrogacy for what felt like a decade), comments turned off shows they know fine well what the readers think but they continue to push it

Lesperance · 06/03/2022 17:03

That is really awful. The women just becomes a commodity.

Clymene · 06/03/2022 18:05

Yeah really gruelling. Casting around for a woman who met their exacting standards to sell them her eggs.
Hoardasurass · 06/03/2022 18:10

All surrogacy should be illegal

MidCenturyClegs · 12/03/2022 14:36

I am trying to piece together a timeline of how the Times used to be ok for discussing women's rights (Janice Turner et al) yet recently on all articles they've been turning comments off. #nodebate I only know much about women fighting against self-ID. If you've any other info could you please pop stuff here? Or DM me. Thanks.
Mistlewoeandwhine · 12/03/2022 15:24

Vile

nothingcomestonothing · 12/03/2022 15:29

Buying the use of a woman's body, for any purpose, should be illegal. Similarly, buying humans of any age should be illegal. Because that is what we're talking about.

Theluggage15 · 12/03/2022 15:53

The Times is massively pro surrogacy. That awful Sophie Beresiner column, the only comments allowed were fan girl stunning and brave, love you hun comments, then it seemed weekly articles on various Times employees who’d used surrogacy made me cancel my subscription.

HRTQueen · 12/03/2022 15:54

Kim was wonderful and tried to give us her surrogate

Well that line sums up absolutely everything wrong about surrogacy. How can you claim that people make unfair judgements when a friend feels she can rent out another woman’s body

Totally self absorbed I want so I shall have as I have money attitude that becuasee they are gay couple is overlooked and celebrated

Liz1tummypain · 12/03/2022 16:02

Well science is moving so fast. You could wonder how a woman can produce a baby and hand it over to a stranger for money as well. People have all kinds of motivations. I couldn't give a child away for any reason. But that's probably been happening for a long time.
