How often do you redecorate your home?

Evening everyone

Just wanted to check how often you re-paint walls, buy new items like curtains etc

I feel like my house needs a yearly re-paint otherwise the house looks so run down and scruffy

My walls are magnolia but get so stained in the kitchen or kid's bedroom, I don't know why?

The sealant around the bath is often getting mould spots etc

We tidy up daily, sweep/ mop frequently but my home always seems to have something broken (like a light switch etc, and as we own the property, it costs us personally to fix it)

Whenever I visit other peoples houses or look at social media, everything looks so clean and shiny so I feel like a slob

Recently did kids room last year, painted, put wall stickers etc, new curtains etc, just one year later wall stickers have been pulled off wall, leaving unsightly marks, wall a mess, they have spoilt their bunk bed etc

Finally how do people keep rugs clean, I have tried using scrubbing brush and carpet cleaner but how do you get the carpet dry in this weather whilst avoiding the damp smell?

Please help me!

Pretty much never. We have lived in our house 7 years and each room has only been decorated once. Some when we first moved in, some in the last 2 years or so. But I must have low standards as I've never noticed things like the walls looking scruffy in my house or anyone else's.

For rugs I just hoover them like any other carpet and spot clean when required.

That's somehow comforting, regarding the rug, I brought a light coloured one with yellow and grey patterns last year, it now looks dingy and not as nice

7 years in our house this year. Was. Anew build so was all white walls when we moved in. Each room except DD2s room, which has been done twice and ours which hasn’t been done yet, have been decorated once.

I hate decorating and can’t be arsed to do it too often. Some rooms are looking a bit shabby (the kitchen in particular) and could do with being redone. I’m trying to care enough to start, but I’m not quite there yet.

Rarely - lived in our current house 11 years, we have replaced the original carpets (apart from three bedrooms) and repainted most of the 'main' rooms. Not replaced sofas for over 20 years (bought cheaply from MFI and assumed we'd upgrade them 'some time' but still perfectly OK). Same kitchen since the house was built (20 + years?).

My DB redecorated and replaces furniture every couple of years - his house looks lovely but he always complains he's hard up Hmm.

EffOrfagain · 04/03/2022 19:26

About every 10 years, I couldn't be bothered moving all the furniture out to do it more often.

FindingMeno · 04/03/2022 19:27

I guess around 3-5 years, but not replacing anything unless it needs it- just a fresh coat of paint.

user1461609321 · 04/03/2022 19:27

We are only about 3 years in and it looks like we have been here far longer

Feels like this house needs a yearly coat of paint to look somewhat decent

Kitchen is 25 years old, we may change it in the next 5 years, it still looks ok though.

DaisyTheUnicorn · 04/03/2022 19:30

Yearly!??!!??! Noone paints yearly surely!? Do you do it? Do yoi get people in?

Wow!

No oil stains etc? My kids seem careless re putting things in the bin, so small marks near dustin wall, marks around light switch etc

Instagram is not real life.

We touch up every few years but do not redecorate very often. It's far too expensive!

OutlookStalking · 04/03/2022 19:31

Do you wash bedding everyday too/ buy new duvets once a year... replace whole rooms furniture?

tyoy · 04/03/2022 19:32

I'd say 10 years is the norm

Perhaps I need to stop comparing my house to what you see on social media or even those cleaning YouTube videos.

At the price it cost to redecorate my hall & landing? Well that's a 20 year job. At least.

Woollystockings · 04/03/2022 19:32

Maybe every ten years. I have been in my place 25 years and I think rooms have been done twice. It does look a bit battered around the edges, though,,especially the hall.

EffOrfagain · 04/03/2022 19:33

No oil stains but we haven't had a child in this house for 10 years and I just wipe any marks with a dettol wipe

peckpeckpeck · 04/03/2022 19:33

We have a very clean home, and have a 1yo and a 3yo. The key is ensuring they don't eat and run, smearing stickiness everywhere, and that they take care with furniture and the house in general. You can train them early on, and if they see you cleaning up after yourself and taking care, they will follow suit.

You might try washable wall paint. We use farrow and ball modern emulsion, and it says any marks can be wiped off easily.

Timeandtune · 04/03/2022 19:34

I would say twice- once when we move in and once when we are looking to sell and move on. We have been in current home for nearly 20 years. Edwardian semi so high ceilings and lots of walls.

user1461609321 · 04/03/2022 19:34

Obviously not, weekly bedding wash etc

But just want to feel like I have my shit together rather than just passing through life

Would love kids to remember having a lovely childhood home, not a run down one (I know it's about the memories created rather than what house looks like) but want more of a balance

Painting, probably 5 years (longer for bedrooms)

Carpets, curtains, furniture etc 10+ years

icklekid · 04/03/2022 19:35

We’ve lived in our house 8 years and painted all rooms but some when we moved in and look fine. We’ve touched up others where scuffed but not whole wall. Every year seems ridiculous but then I’d also be really cross with kids pulling wall stickers off walls etc and wouldn’t allow that. We also use dulux easy care pint that is hardwearing and wipeable for the odd scuff mark but never really thought it would make that big a difference!

Dillydollydingdong · 04/03/2022 19:35

We don't. If there was a major problem we might. Actually, we did the hall, stairs and landing in 2019! It'll have to last though!

sausagepastapot · 04/03/2022 19:37

we have just moved into a bigger house and they haven't cleaned let alone decorated for circa 14 years.

Its truly vile and going to be so much work for us to redo everything.

Hard to believe they could happily live in such a shit hole for so long- hard to believe people can have such non existent standards! I'd be so embarrassed if I was the old owners.
