Do I look like a job hopper?

marooncat7 · 01/03/2022 18:16

I am 30 and my employment history is as follows (since working full time after uni)

From 2015:
1st job - 3 years (then made redundant)
2nd job - 1 year (then left for 3rd job)
3rd job - currently 2 years and 9 months

I have been offered another job which means that will be my 4th job in 7 years. Does that look bad?

Obviously I hope the new job works out long term but you never know...

No, it’s fine. A job hopper is generally someone with multiple one-year stints.
I’m assuming the jobs are in the same broad field and you’re moving up sometimes, not only sideways.

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 01/03/2022 18:20

You have reasons for leaving the first. The 2nd can be explained and the 3rd is a decent length.

ClariceQuiff · 01/03/2022 18:21

Not at all. What I would think (this might not be how it was for you but it's a reasonable interpretation):

You were made redundant - not your choice {job 1). You got another job - most of us would take the first job offered after redundancy to keep the money coming in, and look round for something better once basic income was secured (job 2). Job 3 was a better job for you but after nearly 3 years you're looking to move on - gain more money/responsibility/experience.

I don’t think so, no. There is only one short period in there, and that isn’t particularly short. I’d assume you learnt something in that time and left for a sensible reason since it’s sandwiched between two three-year roles.

I don't even view people with lots of 1 yr stints as a job hopper! If they are progressing upwards it seems fine to me - though I would keep in mind that they'd probably only be with me for a year if I hired them.

I once had a CV through with 5 years worth of 3-6 month contracts. Now THAT was a job hopper!

MintJulia · 01/03/2022 18:48

No, I don't think so. What industry are you in? That would be fairly normal in IT.

ErickBroch · 01/03/2022 18:54

No, depends on industry too. the industry i'm in, the average turnover is 2 years.

AnathemaPulsifer · 01/03/2022 19:01

That’s fine. Two decent stints with a full year in another role between them.
