Julie Burchill article

OP posts:
mcmooberry · 28/02/2022 21:40

Wow what a writer, totally agree but could never have put it so well!

Circlesandtriangles · 28/02/2022 21:40

Im so sick of the lazy narrative that splits the world into people who are snowflakes vs stoic heroes. When did it become possible to divide the world into these two camps?? Of course anyone who is living in the UK and getting hysterical about the war in Ukraine with no real connection to the people is being unreasonable. But that's not all of us in the UK. Lazy click bait. Everything she writes is moaning about woke this and woke that.

Keeva2017 · 28/02/2022 21:48

I voted yabu because I haven’t experienced any of what she is describing. But then maybe I fall in to that category? I watch the news, I find some of it distressing (internally, I don’t cry and wail) and I wonder what it would feel like if I were in that position? I just think of it as empathy?

I do feel sad sometimes about violence in this world, in particular as a mother to daughters, about the violence to women.

I don’t consider myself hysterical though, I don’t think I make it about me. Don’t we all just process Information and emotions differently? I don’t think I’m superior to people who struggle to process world events or who fear the consequences of them.

LethargeMarg · 28/02/2022 21:57

That article was just the balance I needed after all the hysterical threads I've had to hide (I'm a natural worrier and I'm a bit of a snowflake admittedly ) before going to bed

Siameasy · 28/02/2022 21:58

Agree. The Covid angst people were the worst. Its a way of being morally superior “I’m sooo anxious therefore I care much more and am a better person”
Misery loves company so anxious people make their kids and pets just the same as them. They never want to change either because being a victim has huge status and it’s a get out of jail free card.

Rosehugger · 28/02/2022 22:01

It's not all about us at the moment, but it might be, depending on how much of a loose cannon Putin is. It's not unreasonable to be worried.

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 28/02/2022 22:11

Excellent article. What is this world coming to?

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 28/02/2022 22:13

She's just the equal and opposite of the snowflakery she despises, hyping up the extreme examples to whip up her followers into tub-thumping self congratulation.

The reality is the vast vast majority of discourse, on war in Ukraine and life in general, happens in the centre.

She's a brilliant writer, but its self indulgent hyperbole.
I can't bear her, not that she'll give a shit about that, quite rightly.

ldontWanna · 28/02/2022 22:14

YABU . Virtue signalling is still virtue signalling regardless of what side it's on.

Ohh I'm better, stronger, tougher, more stoic than you.

Ohh I'm more empathetic, worried, feeling, with more emotional intelligence than you.

Nah mate you both suck. Two opposite sides of the same shitty coin.

Moaning about "celebrity" twattery is like moaning England is wet.

It's like "isn't this generation so shit and snowflakey" bingo.

pheonixrebirth · 28/02/2022 22:48

I can get on board with feeling empathy for the people of Ukraine but watching this morning and listening to the phone in about peoples anxiety was worrying for the reasons in that article. One woman had taken a day off work because she was so anxious about the situation????? I mean WTAF?!

OneTC · 01/03/2022 00:52

I'm pretty sure I've heard people of birchills generation berating the younger folk for having never lived under the threat of nuclear war and not knowing what anxiety was

And let's be honest spiked is the epitome of Richard Littlejohn style journalism, it's PC GONE F@+£ING MAD, dog whistle racism and shock jocks that have realised there's coin to be had in penning such shite

LINABE · 01/03/2022 10:05

Brilliant article by Burchill as usual. I see so much crap written on here and wonder what the hell we have become.
'Sorry if that's triggering...'
'Oops sorry if I have made any spelling errors - so unforgivable...'
'So frightened about the Storm... what do I tell my children...'
It would be laughable if it wasn't so depressing.
Where's the bloody backbone gone?
No wonder so many find Zelensky attractive on here. He represents the many traits that we seem to have lost.
Snowflakes.

Cocomarine · 01/03/2022 10:06

Someone on the generally very good long Chat thread on Ukraine has actually used the phrase, “as an empath”. Made me think immediately of this thread!

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 01/03/2022 10:15

@Associatepeggy

How have 15% voted yabu. But not been able to post an actual reason for thinking that way? 😕
They will be the people who despise Birchill for being (as they see her) a TERF - the vote won't be relevant to the actual subject, it's just like the blunderbuss hatred for JK Rowling.
somanylies · 01/03/2022 10:16

I explain it to my children (age 8 and 5). The 8 year old wanted to take an air rifle and join the Ukrainians. I explained that child soldiers do exist but are generally frowned upon and so I was not allowing him to go.

But generally neither of them are bothered at all about there being a war other than being thrilled at being shown pictures and videos of tanks and explosions.

Kids cope fine.

Toocooltoboogie · 01/03/2022 10:16

Circlesandtriangles agree with your post. Things are not so easily divided into such camps. If a war came to our shores we would do the same thing as the Ukrainians young and old.

GirlInACountrySong · 01/03/2022 10:21

Food for thought indeed

Georgeskitchen · 01/03/2022 10:33

The social media virtue signalling is through the roof atm. Just read a load of guff about someone buying 40 boxes of tampons ( yes of course you did) and the retail assistant, on learning they were for for Ukraine, said they would match it. I expect this will be sharing multiple 100s of times by those who need to tell the world they care

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 01/03/2022 10:38

Julie Burchill epitomizes that frightening trajectory of becoming more Conservative as you get older. In her case, it's been quite a transition.

I'm beyond sick of seeing that lazy generalization summed up by the words 'snowflake' and 'woke'. 'OK Boomer' does, thankfully, seem to have fallen out of vogue.

3peassuit · 01/03/2022 10:44

I don’t agree with everything she writes but she’s nailed it for me on this one.

Narutocrazyfox · 01/03/2022 10:47

Spot on! I was saying almost exactly this to my husband last night!

strawberryapricotpie · 01/03/2022 10:58

This. Her article makes some valid points, but I'd hate to think what she's like on the topic of genuine mental health issues. Presumably those affected should pull themselves up by the bootstraps and stop whining. Hmm
WhatATimeToBeAlive · 01/03/2022 11:08

Completely agree. I dread to think what would happen if we actually had to take up arms in combat.

Gowithme · 01/03/2022 11:12

I disagree with it, I think it's the usual armchair lecturing/attention seeking bullcrap from someone who just likes to be controversial and writes junk. If she actually was Ukrainian then I would listen to her, but no, she just sees herself as some sort of tough working class hero who stands up for chavs and deplores snowflakes. It's just another opportunity for her to pull down millennials.

People should 'toughen up' - what does that even mean? Should we be telling our 5 year old son's and daughters this? 'The Eastern Europeans are more like we were in the 1940's' Is this supposed to be some sort of backhanded compliment to the Ukrainians? Silly us for not knowing how to make molotov cocktails like they do, if only we'd grown up with 'material deprivation and existential bullying' then we wouldn't be so' weirdly weak-minded'.

And that last paragraph from JSM, 'patriotic feeling' wtf is that? It's like some sort of romantic view of war where we all (completely untrained and with no idea whatsoever) pick up our guns and defend our country against the baddy aggressor and due to our patrioticness, fervour and top morals we will win the day! Nope I value family far more than 'my country' thanks.

The hysterics wouldn't have been seen 40/50/60 years ago because there wasn't 24/7 media and SM. Those are the reasons everything feel so close to us and we are so affected by it - it has made the world a small place.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 01/03/2022 11:17

Oddly enough it's the same kind of line taken up by the arch-misogynistic, anti-woke-bingo-playing Jeremy Clarkson, who I'd bet a pound to a penny Burchill despises and rightly so.

Hear him on the topic of the poor, desperate human beings who have reached the unimaginable state of ending their lives by throwing themselves onto a railway, thus disrupting HIS journey and causing all that inconvenience to other people. According to JC, they are just selfish bastards. They deserve no empathy, their families deserve no empathy. Won't somebody think of the commuters?

Until his dog carks it and people show him the same degree of sympathy and understanding. Then #BeKind gets wheeled out. Those evil, nasty dog-haters are selfish, heartless, cruel people and they've got no empathy. No shit.

It's interesting when you watch people turning into everything they formerly professed to loathe. Burchill's whining is starting to take on a similar timbre to that of JC.

It's tedious.
