What do you do if you don’t like your engagement ring

Partner and I have spoken about marriage he has a family ring to give me when then time is right. I have two of my family rings that I love and wear. Since I was younger I’ve found a style of ring ive wanted as my engagement ring. I’ve been really open minded and love the thought of having something from his family that’s sentimental. But what if I hate it

Tell him exactly what you’d like, or buy your own. You’re marrying him, why would he want you to wear something you hate?

Ilovenutellaaaaa · 26/02/2022 19:03

What about giving you your own wedding ring and using the family one as a honeymoon gift or something (then you can wear it but not all the time )

Ilovenutellaaaaa · 26/02/2022 19:03

*engagement ring...not wedding ring

Blueuggboots · 26/02/2022 19:09

I would be very honest with him now.
Tell him what you want, could the family RJ g be remodelled?

Blueuggboots · 26/02/2022 19:11

Bloody typo!? Family ring be remodelled?

Howshouldibehave · 26/02/2022 19:14

I would explain to him you want to choose an engagement ring together.

MaggieMooh · 26/02/2022 19:25

I would accept the family ring politely and not wear it very often because it’s too antique and delicate for everyday wear. When you get your wedding ring you can wear that along with an eternity ring.

heyitsthistle · 26/02/2022 19:28

Could you just occasionally wear the family ring as a normal ring, and choose an engagement ring together?

My mum did that, and it worked well.

DebiNewberry1997 · 26/02/2022 19:33

I chose my engagement ring with dh. It was an absolutely lovely and special day. I don't really get why everyone doesn't do that. It's potentially a very expensive purchase and doing it as a shared outing is really romantic and sets a good tone for the future. Important, expensive and significant decisions should be made together.

justamumseekingadvice · 26/02/2022 19:59

How long have you been together? Would he know what kind of style you would like?

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 26/02/2022 20:07

Is the style of the ring you want similar to the one he's "saving" for you? Could it be remodelled?
If not, could you agree that you choose a ring together and he gives you the "family" ring as a wedding gift instead that you could wear on your other hand occasionally?

Woahthehorsey · 26/02/2022 20:44

I just don't wear either of my rings unless it's our anniversary.

stormynight1 · 26/02/2022 22:18

He dosnt even no what the ring is like neither do I he’s happy for me not to use the family ring and choose my own. Although I would feel awkward evening proposed to with the family one and then changing it. Would rather be proposed with the ring we both like to begin with.

Just agree you’ll have your own engagement ring but also wear the family one on your other hand for special occasions.

Associatepeggy · 26/02/2022 22:24

If you don't like it get it changed into something you do. Christopher Stoner jewellers do lovely legacy rings. And they design them with you.

Blueuggboots · 27/02/2022 17:14

My friend was proposed to with a family ring which she now wears on the other hand and chose her own engagement ring.
