Partner's employer not letting him work due to cough

It's not COVID-19, he only gets SSP, it's some sort of infection that he's taken antibiotics for but he's physically fit and able to work.
His employer sent him home yesterday as they're worried it's contagious and he shouldn't work until it's gone. He was quite unwell but that's gone and it's just the cough that remains, however they can linger for a while after.
I haven't had it myself luckily.
Anyway a girl at his workplace says her Mum is vulnerable and she doesn't want to work with him in case she passes anything on.
However it's not COVID and who knows when his cough will be fully gone.
He already had 2 weeks off when ill and who knows when the cough will be fully gone.
Aibu to think they are being ott by wanting him to be off until his cough has fully vanished. I've lost my voice previously and had a cough for a while after having a cold.
He's already lost 2 weeks of pay and can wear a mask if required, he's just fed up and wants to get back to work.

Can he get a "fit note" from his GP, saying he is fit to work and non-infectious? Or ask for a referral to occupational health?

You can understand his colleagues' worry, but perhaps with a bit of paper that reassures them that it's not covid they will relax. He could also offer to test daily in case covid is masked by the existing cough.

If in a union, talk to them about the legality of not being allowed to work and not being paid. If not, try ACAS.

I've known people have a cough for months or even years before getting the right treatment, so it's no use just assuming it will just be a few days.

They're being utterly ridiculous.

People can have coughs for weeks/months or even years after being infectious.

I had the flu (def not covid) 6 weeks ago and I'm still coughing. The work place are being ridiculous.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 26/02/2022 16:18

@lanthanum puts it well

A post viral cough can last weeks. I have a permanent cough owing to medication for high blood pressure. They are being ridiculous.

If he has a fit note and there is no reason he shouldn't be at work then they can't force him to be off unless they pay him anyway.
