AIBU to think it's sad when people play Miss Marple?

You get threads here with somebody will say something like my next door neighbour's child keeps using my child's bicycle without asking. And then someone will come and say well OPs dogs won't stop barking when they go to work at 7am, so obviously the neighbours are taking your son's bike as revenge, and you didn't take in a parcel for your sister so obviously you're a mean person etc. Why do people rummage through OP's previous threads, which have very little to do with OP is asking about, to try and build up some sort of narrative.

Is it just me who thinks it's really sad.

And who has time anyway?

Sometimes it is illuminating. And some of us have forensic memory. Shrug.

SwissCheeseRentedChildren · 26/02/2022 01:22

Oh I thought you were sad because it means an actress is getting old when she lands that part. As you were.

Shainago · 26/02/2022 01:26

As long as they dont play Vera!

I thought this too

Sometimes it reveals a surprise

Like the many long standing trolls from years gone by

I think it's fine to do if there's twins or a box room involved

Arabellla · 26/02/2022 01:34

YABU, no one does an AS on such a boring topic. It’s usually done when things don’t add up.

BigupPemberleyMassive · 26/02/2022 01:35

What are the twins and box room stories?

OP posts:
GirlInACountrySong · 26/02/2022 01:43

Long running troll stories. Sucked people in and were found out to be lies

Judge flounce, again, another one

These were years ago

Yanbu. For me, it can only ever be Joan Hickson.

Agreed 😊

Because sometimes the co txt around what someone is posting, makes it a completely different issue, which without the background, you'd not necessarily understand some of the responses.

MonStylo · 26/02/2022 02:07

AS used to be viewed as bad form. Probably too many troll posts has put paid to that though.

‘Really sad’?

I can think of lots of things that are really sad. Advance searching random people’s posts on MN does not fit the bill.

Confused
Wavypurple · 26/02/2022 03:30

How do people know other people’s posting history? Do they just have a really good memory for usernames?

Have no desire to go through anyone’s posting history I’m just interested in how they do it Shock

Possibly. Though Geraldine McEwan wasn't bad either...
Associatepeggy · 26/02/2022 04:16

I only see it used when its relevant so it doesn't bother me.

LimeSegment · 26/02/2022 04:26

No I like when people do this because it can be illuminating but I sure can't be arsed to do it myself.

Yes it seems petty when people post "oh yeah OP well a year ago you said you had a 2 year old dc, now you're saying your dc is 3!"

Other times it's something like is my dp being unreasonable and the answer is not really, but AS reveals a long history of horrible abusive behaviour from the DP. In which case I feel glad I found that out and didn't post "yeah they sound great OP, definitely stay with them forever".

I don't have a good memory for names, but do recognise the frequent flyers on here. The ones who post about the same situation again and again, sometimes with a split twist, hoping for a different set of responses.

As for how to check? Advanced search and user name. I don't feel even slightly guilty about using it. Saves time and trouble on many an occasion.

knittingaddict · 26/02/2022 07:15

Also , if a story sounds distinctly off then why wouldn't you check them out?

I do feel sorry for those who genuinely have twins though. Grin

SeasonFinale · 26/02/2022 07:16

The irony that you asked for someone to share a link to a past thread!Grin

ifherbumwereabungalow · 26/02/2022 07:16

June Whitfield is good on the radio productions.

MaltyChrome · 26/02/2022 07:17

I've seen it used well when a poster is getting an absolute pile on for something and then another poster remembers there is a huuuuge bit of the backstory the OP has forgotten.

Riseholme · 26/02/2022 07:19

Joan Hickson was Agatha Christie's own choice.

LubaLuca · 26/02/2022 07:29

It's human nature to try to not have the piss taken out of you. Nobody's going to great lengths to unmask a villain, just pointing out what's there for everyone to see.
