Is it me, or is the sanction of banning Russia from Eurovision not exactly going to have Putin quaking in his boots, let alone turning back tanks and fighter jets?

I'm not suggesting they should be able to compete - but the package of sanctions to date seem a bit feeble.

Eurovision is a cultural extravaganza. It shouldn't be political.

Have you ever seen Eurovision? It has always been political.

We always vote for Ireland. Of course neighbours may like the music from next to them & cos it's familiar. The Europeans seem to have a better musical PR strategy than we do.
We are-an island that rest of our laurels a lot of the time. And we don't even have to sing in a foreign language.

No, Putin couldn't give a shit about the eurovision but every sanction counts, no matter how seemingly innocuous. Anything that makes Russian people ask themselves "why is the world shunning us? Maybe we're the bad guys". World needs to go full greystone on Russia and completely ostracise them.

squirrelslikenuts · 26/02/2022 20:26

You really think all the Russian people love Putin or his government. What have we done about our government's shenanigans, protest!

But, they get real jail time in nastier conditions than ours. So, these so-called soft sanctions are not harming Putin or his mates. Just taking away small pleasures from everyday people.
The Russians, like the Ukrainians are people. You think they are happy about this invasion or the casualties. Many are inter-married at the borders. Punishing the people never works, it only makes their lives hell. Why do you think people leave Iran and other heavy handed countries? The sanctions hit them, not the governments.
What other way I don't know, hopefully diplomatic talks will be back on the table soon. And those who support war from afar, learn promote peace solutions with the same passion.

Literally no one thinks that.

Bless your naivety.

Classica · 27/02/2022 01:01

There may be pseudo diplomatic talks as in 'we've invaded and we're staying. how rough do you want this to be?'. But if you think Putin et al will negotiate in good faith, you've got another think coming.

@BearOfEasttown

Oh goody, another Ukraine/Russia thread to hide!
….and yet you keep opening them and saying the same thing! Just hide them, there’s absolutely no need to keep announcing it.
Tsubasa1 · 27/02/2022 08:26

Well they can hardly let them compete, can they?

ShittyFingers · 27/02/2022 08:28

Putin is probably thinking “thank fuck for that, less shite on the telly!”
