to think...WTF?!

I mean ok....with randomly generated numbers I get that this would happen but.....when I receive a new bank card and the 3 digit security code is 000 I dont think I am being unreasonable to call the bank to cancel it and request a new one. Woman at the bank clearly disagreed.

Apparently as long as I dont tell anyone apart from for secure payments from trusted sites/companies it wont be a problem. She would not have that 000 is LITERALLY the first number anyone/program would try if they got my card number!

Anyway....new card is on its way, much to her chagrin!

IANBU am I?!

Why not just go to a cash point and change the pin?

PyongyangKipperbang · 25/02/2022 10:51

Oh and AIBU to memorize said 3 digit code and then scratch it off the back of my card just in case it gets nicked/lost and I dont notice straight away? It wont stop anyone using it contactless but would stop it being used online etc. According to my friend, that is weird too.

It wasnt the pin it was the 3 digit code on the signature strip on the back of the card.

Because that won't change the cvv number???

You're right, it'd be very easy to get to that number, starting off logically. The bank staff is a bit obtuse not comprehending that.

decisionsincisions · 25/02/2022 10:57

Can you say oops a daisy you lost the card - please issue a new one? Will that card have a different cvv number?

The bank should change it to save you the faff.

PyongyangKipperbang · 25/02/2022 10:57

Thanks....I ended up thinking that I was missing something because she was so certain that this was not a problem! I mean ok.....a computer program would eventually cop on if it was say...784 or whatever, but come on!

I don't think it's a huge issue but you can order a new card on your online banking

Creeeper · 25/02/2022 11:00

Yeah that would be weird to me too and I’d prefer to have a different number

However I’ve found that customer service is pretty universally awful at the moment. Especially on the phone there seems to be a lot of attitude rather than help if that makes sense? (With the exception of my council who were absolutely brilliant in helping with council tax!)

EenieWeenie · 25/02/2022 11:02

I'm surprised that whoever made the programme didn't realise that TBH. Glad it's all sorted now

QuiltedHippo · 25/02/2022 15:38

I think a hacking algorithm (no idea of the terms) would check all 999 possible number combinations in the blink of an eye so I don't think it's too big of a deal.

It will yes. I lost mine and it was ridiculously hard to forget the old one and remember the new one.

The 3 digit code is embossed into the card. It doesn't really scratch off easily, iyswim. And if you went that deep it might make the card unusable.

From.what number would be acceptable to you? 001, 002, 003...?
