To ask for a computer genius to help me find a document??

I’ve been working on a document on word all day. Auto save is switched on, all fine. Came back from dinner to find my computer had restarted, and when I looked on the autorecovered word docs, 2000 words were missing from my document.

I’ve tried:

Restoring document history - said I hadn’t worked on it since the day before
Looking in temp files - nothing
Recycling bin - nothing
Looking for unsaved files - nothing
Trying to set back the computer to before the update - didn’t work.

I’m basically a sobbing mess as this document was really important and like an idiot I assumed word wouldn’t just randomly delete all trace of me working on it today. Is there any way I can find all the work I did even if all version histories are saying it point blank doesn’t exist? Or should I just give up??

I’ve tried googling and I’ve run out of options, I’m desperate!

Is it Word 365? If autosave is on, might be saving to your Microsoft cloud thingy?

Pixiedust1234 · 25/02/2022 01:20

I would stop wasting time trying to find it now and start retyping. Some autosaves can be 30 minutes apart, some 5 minutes apart, it depends on how you have set it up. I am guessing if 2000 words are missing then autosave is more likely set for every 30 mins. Sorry Sad

I think this might be right. You've been looking locally on your hard drive. But in fact it's been getting saved not on your own computer but in the cloud (OneDrive). I really hope so, how stressful Flowers

Bloody hell, if you can write 2,000 words in 30 mins get a job with Mills & Boon Grin

Can you find it from your recent documents list?

justasoul · 25/02/2022 01:24

That’s name, OneDrive. Fingers crossed for you, OP.

computerilliterate · 25/02/2022 01:27

Thanks, as far as I can tell the document only saved in my one drive for some reason and not anywhere else. I was working on it gradually throughout the day but it last shows me as working on it on Wednesday afternoon when I was definitely on it much more recently. Argh, I will start retyping but you know when you’re on a roll?! I had a rare wave of inspiration that hasn’t come easily (been struggling with my mental health) and this is really the last straw for my rationality 😂I’ll be ok in the morning but tonight I am annoyed.

I’ve had a look on one drive online - the most recent version is showing as tonight after I did my reboot. I don’t know what has happened to it. I’ll feel better tomorrow I hope but argh fucking bloody technology!!!

If it’s on your OneDrive, you might want to try this, OP

view previous versions of office files

computerilliterate · 25/02/2022 01:49

Thank you, I’ve tried that and nothing. I tried to restore my whole one drive and I can see it hasn’t updated for several days - wondering if that is the problem. So annoyed I didn’t realise my file had saved there, I don’t trust the cloud!!

Sad sorry, OP, that’s soul destroying. Flowers

I’ve put in a request with the one drive team to try and request it. I’ve probably overreacted a bit but I’m not feeling well and am also currently strapped to a heart monitor - will be interesting to see how the stress levels are 😂 fingers crossed I can get my file back, if not back to the drawing board trying to remember the masterpiece I wrote before…!
