Sexist remark on BBC Radio 4

This is sort of light hearted but I was half listening to the Today programme sports slot at (8.30) only because I was waiting for the news round up. Gary, the presenter, appeared to be interviewing someone who I gather was off to join the England cricket squad (I dont follow cricket) and asked the interviewee whether he was ready to go. The cricketer mentioned that he stil had to iron things. “Oh” said Gary. - “you still have to iron your own things even though you’re an England cricketer”. The cat jumped 3 feet in the air as I yelled at the radio. Would he have said that to a woman English cricketer? Dont hold your breath

I would take that to mean that when you’re in a squad for your country you would think there would be someone organising the kit etc.
I don’t think premiere footballers take their kit home to the missus, it’s sorted at the club. That’s what I would take that comment to mean.

luxxlisbon · 23/02/2022 09:01

Most professional athletes don’t launder their own kit - that was the point, not sexism.

purplemunkey · 23/02/2022 09:03

Yes, I’d interpret that the same way PP has.

FiveShelties · 23/02/2022 09:07

I would not consider that sexism either, just a reference that you would think the team had someone to sort the kit out.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 23/02/2022 09:09

I would have assumed cricketers were like footballers and don't have to wash/iron their own kit

What they said 👆

Nocaloriesinchocolate · 23/02/2022 09:10

OK. I may have misunderstood - but I got the impression said cricketer wasn’t currently part of the squad but as flying out to join the squad so this morning he’s on his own.

As you were folks

Male and female jockeys have valets (male or female).
