Sanctions pointless

So Germany is going to carry on buying gas from Russia, just not more gas.

The EU is preventing the sale of Russian bonds (I can’t imagine theres a massive rush for those). Preventing them from accessing financing on money markets (Russia has apparently significant foreign reserves and an extremely low debt to GDP ratio) and sanctioning some people.

The Uk - well pathetic springs to mind.

Is it just me or does this seem slightly inadequate given that they are invading another country (well actually invaded it a few years ago).

The Tories aren't going to ban their donors!

Imagine sending Liz Truss as our lead diplomatic, our show of power and strength. We're a laughing stock.

TokyoSushi · 22/02/2022 19:03

Agree, Russia won't give a toss about the so called sanctions.

Crookedman · 22/02/2022 19:04

I think all of them are, I mean Germany FFS, whatever gas purchases they make are going to be financing the lobbing of missiles at civilians. It hardly teaching them a lesson to keep buying from them. I’m only hoping they find a stop gap soon so they can actually stop contributing to this war.

3 people, we are sanctioning 3 people! I actually feel appalled. The people that are to be sanctioned are definitely inner circle and absolutely right to sanction them but we must be able to do more.

Inadequate. Not even turning off the RT channel, for example.

Crookedman · 22/02/2022 19:10

I honestly don’t think it matters who you send, Russia doesn’t care. Macron running around just provided some cover and time buying for Putin. I means when he went Putin basically said Macron talks so much he felt like he was being tortured 🙄. Lavrov uses calculated insults and putdowns regularly. I still remember when Putin had his dog wandering around the room when meeting Merkel (she has a well known fear of dogs) and she was the most powerful politician in Europe.

They aren’t interested in negotiating despite the wests persistent belief that they can negotiate with them and of we just try to understand them better or take their concerns seriously we can stop them. It’s naïve.

Yes, this.

From what I understand, the only thing that would hurt Russia (even a little bit) would be to stop buying their gas, but then that would hurt us too.

I'm not sure what else it's possible to do though, someone with more knowledge would have to fill in that blank for me...

Crookedman · 22/02/2022 19:15

Oh god yeah, turn off RT, stop buying their gas, freeze all Russian assets that the are known to be associated with Putin and his people Suspend all visas of putins associates. Make it UNCOMFORTABLE. Apparently they can manage for 2 years without selling the west any gas at all. Thats a depressing thought. Just waiting for China to have a pop at Taiwan now.

How uncomfortable can it be though? If you're a despot with a gas supply, a large military, economic reserves and a desire to invade other countries to correct perceived historical injustices that you're still bitter about, I don't think there's a lot that's going to stop you?

Of course, I'd be happy to be wrong!

DrManhattan · 22/02/2022 19:32

Been in Ukraine since 2014, he doesn't care.

Fuckitydoodah · 22/02/2022 19:34

Putin isn't going to give a shit. He knew this would happened and had planned for it. It's the equivalent of spitting on a bonfire.

Dilbertian · 22/02/2022 19:41

Crimea was a test run. The West went "Oh dear, please be a good boy" but actually did diddly squat. Now Putin knows he can help himself to the rest of Ukraine.

I agree, more along the lines of hoping that people around him get sick of it and depose him

It’s depressing to think that he seems to actually be planning to invade all of Ukraine and theres not much anyone can do barring military intervention which I doubt many have the appetite for.

Those demanding the closure of RT - do you really want to live in a country which bans press outlets?

LaMagdalena · 22/02/2022 20:11

'I agree, more along the lines of hoping that people around him get sick of it and depose him'

I can't claim to know much about Putin's inner circle and whether that's likely (although I doubt it), but I keep linking this podcast in threads, it's pretty interesting, I think the guy mentions the people around Putin at one point.
