To think if your dog "keeps running after deer"

WhoWants2Know · 21/02/2022 19:56

A friend was talking about getting a gps tag for her dog (lurcher) because every time the dog walker lets it off lead, the dog runs after deer and gets lost.

AIBU to think they need to get a better dog walker instead? Why continue letting a dog off lead to chase wildlife, just because now you have a device that lets you see where it's gone?

Tell her it will end up getting shot and killed if it chases a deer into a field with sheep in it. Farmers don't fuck about with unrestrained dogs, especially in lambing season.

echt · 21/02/2022 19:59

YANBU, dogs shouldn't harrass wildlife:

But anyway:

OhFuckBloodyHell · 21/02/2022 20:03

Show her this, then tell her to get a dog walker that understands the bloody law, and that the dog has to be 'under control' before the dog gets shot / hit by a car or someone / something gets hurt.

Why the hell would anyone send their dog to a dog walker who lets the dog off the lead anywhere near wild animals or wildlife, and knowing it's going to disappear.

Well I wouldn't be friends with someone like that for a start. They clearly don't care about wildlife.
Tell them that they need to keep their dog on a lead because it will likely get run over. Deer have a habit of running across roads and the dog will likely continue the chase across the road.

WhoWants2Know · 21/02/2022 20:11

That's exactly what I said. Also its nearing the time when deer will have babies to protect, and won't be happy with a dog coming near.

Wait til her ddog comes back torn.. Our Lurcher has scars from wire fencing.

*obviously the deer issue but seeing she cares not about them maybe mention risk to her ddog..

WhoWants2Know · 21/02/2022 20:24

I did try to explain it by emphasising the risk to the dog, but I'm gobsmacked that I even have to.

The dog is a from a rescue. With 3 legs. Guess why?

If I was a dog walker, I would be mortified if I had to ring a client and explain that their pet was missing because I let it off lead without being sure of its recall.

I don't know which is worse, that the walker keeps doing it or that they continue letting her.

She's a bloody idiot to allow the dog walker to let the dog off, and the dog walker is utterly irresponsible to let it loose. So many dog walkers seem to be completely incompetent and are often uninsured too.

WonderfulYou · 21/02/2022 20:27

Thank you!! @echt I forgot about this gem!

And yes absolutely!
The dog should not be allowed off the lead and if it keeps doing it she needs to get a different dog Walker.

catinboots123 · 21/02/2022 20:27

@echt

I know it's not funny but I was just coming on to say.....

FENTON

OH BLOODY HELL FENTON

SantaHat · 21/02/2022 20:28

Fuck me. This is awful. Your friend is a shit dog owner and her dog walker just beyond. If I knew the dog walker I would be reporting them to the local council and id be tempted to report your friend to the rescue they got the dog from. They’re both lucky the dog hasn’t been killed.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 21/02/2022 20:33

Your friend and her dog walker are both as bad as each other.

The dog walker shouldn't be letting any dogs off the lead unless they have rock solid recall and the area is safe for them to be off-lead.

Your friend is an idiot for using a dog walker who doesn't care about her dogs' safety. A tracker won't stop a farmer shooting her dog because it's chased a deer into field full of sheep.

megletthesecond · 21/02/2022 20:35

Yanbu.
Fenton was a best case scenario.

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 21/02/2022 20:36

Can you rate the ddog walker online?

OutsideVoice · 21/02/2022 20:41

I have a lurcher - she cannot be let off her lead except in dog parks with high fencing. God knows where she’d end up, in what state, and what might be in danger because of her! Lurchers are bred for prey drive, and depending on the breeding could bring down a deer.

Both the dog owner and the walker sound irresponsible. The dog walker at the very least should know better.

Ludo19 · 21/02/2022 20:49

Why is the dog walker letting off a lurcher with a high prey drive? Safe to do in a fully enclosed space with a six foot plus high fence.
I agree with everyone else, if that dog gets into a field the farmer will and will be within his rights to protect his livestock.
Your friend needs to get another dogwalker, one with experience!

DrManhattan · 21/02/2022 20:52

She's a dick

Greenbluestar · 21/02/2022 23:44

Ergh. Hate this. Put the bloody dog on a lead please. It will be someone’s cat next.

longwayoff · 22/02/2022 06:51

The dog walker is an idiot and so is your friend. Neither of them are fit to look after an animal. This shouldn't need explanation.
