In tesco this morning. There was a couple acting very suspicious. Doing Th scan and go thing. Burying in the alcohol. I saw them a few times round the store. Couldn't hear the 'beep' of the scanner much.
Got to the till and all the staff were gathering watching them. The trolley was over flowing a good 8 large bags for life full.
I said to one staff member who I know 'they look suss they wernt scanning much' she said yeah I know but unless the till asks for a spot check there's nothing we can do.
The total was £32.16!

I saw them put 2 x wine in alone.

I was walking out not far behind them and the security guard who was amongst those watching just watched them walk out.

My friend said they see it all the time!

I got pulled once for having a pack of baby socks hung on the hook that I forgot to take off. Obviously then paid and they were fine. But I don't understand how they can let them walk out!

That isn’t right at all. I used to work there and security would zoom in and watch, and record, suspicious characters. They would even, on the till system, check the items scanned and the receipt /total amount and radio the person on the door to stop them. They may do that over a couple of their visits though, just to record that it was their intent to steal rather than them be able to claim it was an accident, or they didn’t realise.

The only reason they wouldn’t stop is if they feared for employees safety - at one point there was a bloke who would wave a syringe of blood around and say he was HIV positive and he would stab them so people wouldn’t stop him or, if they were understaffed and didn’t have someone spare who could man the camera as well as have staff on the door, they would have to let people go through. Our store would never let someone get away if they were that obvious though, they would put a section manager on the door to stop them whilst security manned the camera if they were that obvious.

Depends on the store clearly, I’ve known security guards to stop people for not scanning a 20p bag

Maybe the store have had some violent/aggressive shop lifters so management have told them not to approach?
It's the only thing I can think of to explain why they wouldnt do anything.

The security guard just needed to walk over and check their receipt against their shopping.

The staff in that store dont sound like they are being supported at all. That would be worth a chat with Tesco but that obviously not really possible.

Ah ye so didn't think about the violence side of it. I'll. Ask my friend again when I'm next in there. Its one of them things that have bugged me all day.

Employees aren’t allowed to stop thieves because of the risk of violence. Security doesn’t always stop them on the first go round because sometimes they are building a larger case or want to catch someone more important. That was true when I worked retail 30 years ago and it’s still true today.

A couple of years ago I started following a man in a store who I noticed was following a woman through a large store. I was tracking him until I could alert security. That was until I realized he was security and he was watching her steal over and over again. I ended up seeing her again when I was checking out. They let her walk right out the door. They clearly had a bigger plan.

I love that - you following someone who was following someone else! I wonder if someone was following you!

They choose their people wisely. Who wants to stop a dodgy looking geezer when you can stop an easy going person for a bag 🤷‍♀️

Seems grossly unfair for all of us who are diligently honest ... to see they do absolutely nothing when it's screamingly obvious!
