Bloody trains. !!

Me and dd have a big trip to London today to see Mary poppins and stay over at a hotel. I booked train tickets last week. Southern rail are now telling People not to travel. Do I try and get a train anyway? We have no other way of getting there.

Is it because of tees down on lines again?

ChiselandBits · 21/02/2022 09:04

Yes do. Those things are not refundable or transferable usually. There will be trains, but possible delays and unusual timetables.

Maggiesgirl · 21/02/2022 09:05

Ds, DIL and DGD got a train into London from Salisbury OK this morning.

ChiselandBits · 21/02/2022 09:06

Or rail replacement buses. Get to the station early, take snacks and water and be prepared for a bit of faff but unless they are saying literally that all trains are cancelled, I would go.

cheninblanc · 21/02/2022 09:06

Its not really their fault we've had back to back storms and now have trees come down, but for everyone's safety they need to put speed restrictions in place. You can travel just leave early and be prepared for a slower journey

TheFuckingDogs · 21/02/2022 09:08

We travelled by train during free storm the other day, long journey. Was definitely a faff but we got to our destination and it was worth it

toomuchlaundry · 21/02/2022 09:10

In some areas the weather is worse than Friday

Rrrob · 21/02/2022 09:11

I got trains on Sat (into Clapham Junction) and Sun (into Victoria). Some delays/ cancellations but generally fine. The word on my local fb group (we are in zone 5) is that trains are running fine, even though the Southeastern website says not to travel. Go, it will be fine.

kindlyensure · 21/02/2022 09:11

If they are running trains then get on a train. But deffo take snacks (because the train might come across an obstacle enroute as happened to us yesterday and we had to get off the train trackside. Eventually.) Today in our region all trains are cancelled so we couldn't go anywhere if we wanted to. Tomorrow is meant to be better so you should get back ok. Or is there a coach you could take if no trains?

Wavypurple · 21/02/2022 09:12

You can try and go but you might not be able to get back without a huge hassle.

If it was me I wouldn’t go but I’m pretty risk averse.

TibetanTerrah · 21/02/2022 09:13

Bit of misinformation on this thread. Southeastern for example have said they will NOT run any replacement buses or alternatives. They have said if you have pre bought your ticket you can use it for travel on another day, although that doesn't help you with your theatre tickets and hotel booking. Can you contact both and see if you can change dates?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/02/2022 09:14

They aren't really doing it out of spite - there are trees and probably more bloody trampolines on multiple lines. The ones that weren't scheduled to be closed for maintenance from last week already.

Check your route. If there isn't a tree on the track, you might be lucky as you're not coming back tonight - but the website does suggest that there are already people stranded - would you be able to deal with it if you suddenly found yourselves stuck on a train for 2-3 hours due to another one coming down?

It's shit, but it's weather, not trains that's the problem.

Seeline · 21/02/2022 09:15

Southern will use any excuse to stop people travelling. Usually by just not supplying any trains......

Definitely go, but be prepared to try any alternative at shirt notice.

lollipoprainbow · 21/02/2022 09:16

Thanks all we have booked a hotel for tonight so getting home isn't an issue. It will be hard to rearrange the theatre plus my daughter has ASD so trying to tell her we aren't going today after she's talked about nothing else will be awful. We'll get to the station a bit earlier and see what's happening. We don't need to in London until 5pm. There aren't any replacement buses which is a shame.

(Re coaches I meant a National Express or Mega Bus. You can get tix on the day)

lollipoprainbow · 21/02/2022 09:25

@NeverDropYourMooncup no I appreciate it's not the trains fault just bloody annoying and story of our life, nothing ever runs smoothly for us!

Hope you remembered a spoonful of sugar!

The journey home should be easier I expect.
