I did something really stupid I accidentally left my car unlocked and it's got damaged it's cost us £400. We are not rich this is a lot of money to us. I feel so awful I can stop crying. My oh is mad but he's not saying anything. I hate myself .

That's awful for you. How did it get damaged? We all do things we regret, so don't feel stupid.

PolkaSpace · 19/02/2022 20:29

Don't hate yourself. You didn't do it on purpose. You didn't damage your own car.

MadMadMadamMim · 19/02/2022 20:30

What does leaving it unlocked have to do with the damage to the car?

Are you insured?

TabithaTittlemouse · 19/02/2022 20:31

Damaged in what way?

Emilyaparis · 19/02/2022 20:31

Victim blaming in a sense though, isn't it? You're not stupid, the people that robbed you are scum.

Please don't blame yourself, we all do silly things in life! You're not to blame, those thugs are!!

What does it being unlocked have to do with it being damaged? Did someone break into it?

I left my car unlocked one night because I was distracted trying to get my son out his car seat and into the house as well as get my work bag out and other paraphernalia. Believe it or not, someone tried to steal it that night and it was only halted because my neighbour’s daughter got up for a drink of water and saw the deadbeat trying to jump start it. He was kicking lumps out the car as well. The police arrived pretty quickly and arrested him but never knocked my door because they didn’t know who the car belonged to (residential parking).

I drove the car to work next morning and marvelled at how clean the car was. Only when I came home that night my other neighbour alerted me to the fact that my car had been finger printed and searched by the police 😂😂😂

Indeed I checked boot and it had been ransacked and yes, my stupidity nearly caused the car to be stolen 🥴

callmebymyname1 · 19/02/2022 20:36

I should add that the police’s systems were down for number plate recognition. You couldn’t make it up.

The culprit stole Kirby grips, £10 in change and a boost chocolate bar. The police returned it all.

Thank you for kind replies.
I seem to do stupid things all the time losing keys/bank cards. This time it's my stupidity that's cost us so much money. We are insured but car was unlocked.

How has it cost £400

Xmassprout · 19/02/2022 20:43

Are you always so hard on yourself? I could understand being frustrated with yourself and it is a lot of money. But to hate yourself because you forgot to lock the car seems a bit much. Are you OK?

Please be kinder to yourself. Accidents happen.

I don't think I am all time. When something like this happens. I start to tell myself how stupid I am and how no one really cares about me and I deserve it. It makes me cry and get these aches in my body. But I feel like I deserve it .
