To get fed up with strange behaviour at gym

Why are some people so strung up at the gym? I'm training hard, looking like something the cat dragged through the hedge backwards, and notice during my recovery that a particular 40-something woman is giving me the evil eye. On more than one occasion. Mostly when I'm training with a PT who she seems to be friendly with. She's younger and in better shape than I am so it's not that she's jealous of me. I've tried starting conversation with her but that fell on deaf ears, so I know she's not watching me because she's interested in me.
The icing on the cake was when her friend virtually squared up to me, looking me straight in the eyes and not speaking and I had to kind of squeeze past her. I smiled at her and made a banal comment about training, but I really feel like I shouldn't have to pander to whatever is going on in their heads. What is it with people?! Confused

Steroids

RubyRedRoses · 19/02/2022 14:28

Yeah, oldraver might have the answer there.

Otherwise, fuck knows. Very weird and not something I've experienced at the gym

statetrooperstacey · 19/02/2022 14:31

You sure she’s not just piggy backing in your training session ? Picking up tips etc copying your routine ?

That could be it. Explains her close proximity anyway.

Is the PT her boyfriend or something lol?

The squaring up puts that thought to bed. The OP is there she knows what the vibe is that this person is giving off. If you were picking up tips why wouldn’t you be polite…

I would have complained about the squaring up incident, especially if you felt unsafe.

PT is single. They could be seeing one another on the sly I suppose. That would explain it.

Why I love our home set up, I can lift in peace (well except when the kids come asking for food or to complain).

mnahmnah · 19/02/2022 14:48

Unless you’re making strange Monica Seles-type noises while you train, or are sweating all over the equipment without wiping it down, or smell terrible… they’re the weirdos.

There was only me and two guys in my gym the other week. One of them was aggressively stomping between two pieces of equipment, screaming at the top of his lungs in between. Left me feeling uncomfortable and nearly complained to the desk.

fenellastripe · 19/02/2022 15:24

She sees you as potential competition. She sees how hard you work. She's either predatory towards the PT or protecting an established relationship with him. The friend is being supportive of her by showing you she's a barrier to you (to your progress).
Ignore, ignore, ignore.

Howabsolutelyfanfuckingtastic · 19/02/2022 15:40

That is rather strange behaviour, not experienced anything like that at the gym before. I'd just ignore them for now, if it escalates then you'd have good reason to complain to a member of staff. Some people are just odd.

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/02/2022 15:59

I think the answer is they are weird. P

Just ignore .

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 19/02/2022 16:21

Drugs or steroids perhaps.
