Boomer parents being judgemental about gig economy income

Cupofteaandnewspaper · 18/02/2022 15:51

This is something I’ve noticed with myself but also a close friend. Our parents don’t understand our gig economy incomes and are very against it all, and only encourage us to have one job that’s a salaried thing they understand (e.g. run of the mill admin for a large company they’ve heard of).

I’m very into diversifying my income and developing a trickle portfolio through multiple platforms, all I get is negativity when I discuss this! I’m doing the safe thing of having a salary and building up on the side, I really see a lot of potential in what I’m doing and I wish my parents could see that it’s paying for various things. All I want is positive encouragement rather than being told it’s a bad idea!

Gig economy?

Miraloma · 18/02/2022 15:53

Only fans?

PolkaSpace · 18/02/2022 15:53

What are your gigs? How do you prove your steady income for mortgage purposes?

DrSbaitso · 18/02/2022 15:54

What exactly do you do?

MaxCrashtappen · 18/02/2022 15:54

Don't know what you're on about

Onlyforcake · 18/02/2022 15:55

Maybe you're overstating your finances? I don't share my income or outgoings with anyone but my husband and HMRC.

HumunaHey · 18/02/2022 15:55

Do you rely on your parents financially in any way? If not, who cares what they think?

itwasntaparty · 18/02/2022 15:55

It's a bad idea.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/02/2022 15:56

The gig economy has massive downsides www.pewresearch.org/internet/2021/12/08/the-state-of-gig-work-in-2021/

The fact that you call them Boomers though rather suggests you won't consider their views. Which is fine if that's your choice.

3luckystars · 18/02/2022 15:56

Do you use those words when talking to your parents? Maybe they don’t understand what you are saying?

I don’t. All the best though with the finances.

TammyOne · 18/02/2022 15:57

Boomer parents? My parents were "Boomers" and they would be 70+
My kids are Boomers (2000's babies)
I expect your parents are Generation X, in which case I would be surprised if they didn't have a few random jobs that cobbled together an income, I know I did in my 20s.
Is a "trickle portfolio thru multiple platforms" kid speak for "making a bit of money selling clothes on Vinted and doing online surveys"?

NightmareSlashDelightful · 18/02/2022 15:58

Why do you care what they think?

Assuming you're an adult -- run your own life and take responsibility for the lot, fuck-ups to triumphs. You don't need anyone's approval.

SirChenjins · 18/02/2022 15:59

If you’re doing something grim on Only Fans then perhaps they’re concerned that your trickle portfolio (whatever the hell that is) isn’t quite what they had in mind for their child.

Is this one of those posts where we’re all supposed to go ‘ooh, sounds interesting, how do you make enough money’ and then you invite us to PM you for more info, and then we find out it’s MLM by another name?

Allmyfavouritepeople · 18/02/2022 15:59

I hear you OP. There's lots of risks to it and therefore lots of judgement. I'm making myself get a 'proper' job so I can start fresh after separation but hoping to keep the multiple incomes trickling in as much as possible.

It's not viewed as sensible until you're successful but how will you get there otherwise? Go for it!

Wingedharpy · 18/02/2022 16:00

I don't understand what you're talking about.
I am not your Mother, just in case you were wondering.Wink

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/02/2022 16:00

I expect your parents are Generation X

The stealth generation. Also the best.

BirdOnTheWire · 18/02/2022 16:01

YABU for using the word Boomers. Haven't a clue about what you mean but it sounds dodgy.

Allmyfavouritepeople · 18/02/2022 16:01

And this is multiple freelance work in the education and child workforce rather than only fans and mlm. It's just being a freelancer/contractor/self employed at the end of the day.

EmmaH2022 · 18/02/2022 16:01

Don't talk to them about it

My late father disapproved of/didn't understand freelancing. How an intelligent person could have that view is beyond me.

Mum still puzzles over it as now she really sees the benefit as it is easier for me to help her.

Sparklesocks · 18/02/2022 16:01

What sort of work are you doing that they disprove of? It’s hard to see why anyone would majorly object to someone delivering food or driving a taxi alongside a salaried role.

MajorCarolDanvers · 18/02/2022 16:01

Boomers?

Nice way to speak about your parents. 🙈

Chilledchablis1 · 18/02/2022 16:02

I was born in the 1950s so am a Boomer and I find that , unlike other terms, it is usually said in a negative way which annoys me greatly.

user1493494961 · 18/02/2022 16:02

They probably don't know what you're on about.

Gowithme · 18/02/2022 16:03

I'm confused, are you on a salary or not? What exactly are you diversifying into? Poker? Porn? Reborn dolls?
TBF though anyone who calls their parents 'Boomers' are obviously BVU no matter what else they say.

DrSbaitso · 18/02/2022 16:03

I'm a millennial. I don't even like avocado.
