To drive from Cheltenham to London later on today?

I need to get back to London by 10am tomorrow. I'd rather go back tonight than have to get up at the crack of dawn tomorrow, but obviously don't want to drive if it's unsafe.

Has anyone been out on the roads today, especially the A40? What are conditions like? The forecast is suggesting the winds will drop from about 4pm but still gusting at 42-48mph - is that okay to drive in?

The storm is expected to abate this afternoon in London, but I can't speak for what road disruption may have been created in the meantime.

The A40 is pretty exposed at the western end, so I’d be wary - the A417 is shut at the moment, which is close to where you’ll be starting from. I’ve done Northleach to Oxford on that road in wind several times before and you can definitely feel it going along the top. The problem is that it’s gusty, so you’re not braced when a gust comes, and then it’s easy to find yourself in a different lane.

@MillyMollyMandyMaybe that's what I was worried about. I might have to wait and make a call later today. It doesn't feel too bad at the moment but I’m in town and it's obviously a bit more sheltered than the roads will be!

@Echobelly good to know; any idea what time it's supposed to abate?

We’re out near Cirencester and it’s still pretty hairy here at the moment, though I think the interval between gusts is increasing now. I’d check the @glosroads Twitter account because they are updating where there are fallen trees, etc.

I'd go tomorrow morning. I hope your definition of need is for something such as working in a hospital or caring for a vulnerable person.

@MillyMollyMandyMaybe thanks, I'll check hat account out.

@balalake why do you care what my definition of 'need' is?
