to avoid travelling today!?

DP is due to collect dsd from school today and she is to spend the half term with us. Dsd lives 100 miles away and dp suggested to dsd's mum that he collect Saturday morning instead of today due to storm Eunice, the advice is not to travel unless completely necessary etc.

AIBU to think this is a reasonable suggestion? I certainly wouldn't want my daughter travelling 100 miles in this storm today.

It depends where you are and how bad it’s actually going to be.
Wednesday’s some was meant to be bad here, but it was just windy with showers.

GeneLovesJezebel · 18/02/2022 06:57

Sofasling · 18/02/2022 06:59

It's expected to be quite bad, we're in the Amber warning area (like most of england).

We were amber the other day. It was fine apart from a couple of hours overnight. So I'd look at the forecast of when the worst is likely to be and travel outside the times.
Only yellow today tho.

girlmom21 · 18/02/2022 07:21

It depends on actual areas. We were the same on Wednesday - lots of wind but mostly very safe.

One man died but it was a freak accident and it hasn't been confirmed it was because of the storm.

There's flooding risks over the weekend. That's much more dangerous. Can he not go this morning and have her miss the day from school?

100 miles each way is barely going to be a morning trip and the storm has already made land fall, warning came into place at 7am.

Tomorrow morning is the best bet, why risk it? Hopefully your DH agrees.

I am in red warning area and its barely a breeze, I've just taken dd to school and walked dogs.
I think it's a but dramatic tbh to decide now your not driving this afternoon.
Wait and see, here it's supposed to be better this afternoon

We've been moved to red and all schools have been shut by council.

I agree that waiting until later is wise. It's meant to ease by 3/4pm.

However totally reasonable not to travel 200mile round trip when we've been told to travel for necessary purposes only.

I'm sure DSD would rather travel when it's safer too.

Sofasling · 18/02/2022 07:39

I think the problem is the storms are always unpredictable. There's no way of knowing if the route there and back is going to remain problem free.

That's why I think for the sake of 1 night, the safest option would be to wait it out and travel tomorrow.

Have you looked at the travel information for the journey?

For example... the QE2 bridge on the M25 is shut with the tunnel in action both ways. I'm personally glad I've put my journey back to Yorkshire off by a day...

girlmom21 · 18/02/2022 07:42

@Cakelover17 it could easily be completed by 1pm.

If it floods tomorrow it's a lot more dangerous to drive then.

PotatoGoblins · 18/02/2022 07:43

I’ve been checking weather warnings all night. I’ve got an immediate family member’s funeral today a 2 hour drive away Confused
If it wasn’t something so pressing, I wouldn’t be travelling anywhere today.

Sofasling · 18/02/2022 07:48

I've just checked on route planner and best option has changed from 100 miles to 146 so there must be road closures/diversions.

Sorry to hear that, I hope today goes as well as these things can and your journey is unproblematic.

I'd only not travel if you were in red alert..

PotatoGoblins · 18/02/2022 08:22

@Sofasling thank you - it was a very sudden, unexpected death, so we are all still in a bit of a spin about it.

Sofasling · 18/02/2022 10:40

Decision made, dp will be collecting dsd tomorrow morning. Dsd mum not at all happy about it but safty first.
