What to do with my dog tonight

He won’t stop barking. I’ve never known him like this. He’s still young (14 months) he does bark if someone comes to the house or he sees something in the garden but never known this.

He sleeps in with me but won’t settle I’ve left bedroom door open and he’s downstairs just barking and barking at back door.

We are detatched do I don’t think disturbing neighbours. DH is away I don’t know what to do. Could he sense the storm coming?

If my dog does this, I take him to the end of the road and back to calm down. Have you tried this?

kindlyensure · 17/02/2022 23:08

Do you have curtains at the door you can pull across so he can't see out?

Or what happens if you let him outside? Can he go and see what's out there and satisfy himself that there is nothing?

(If you ask this in the doghouse you might get some better ideas?)

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 17/02/2022 23:11

If you feel safe then take him out so he can see whatever he’s barking at. Failing that could you block his access?

MichelleScarn · 17/02/2022 23:12

Oh I'd take him upstairs with me to sleep 😳 comfort and company for you both in the storm!

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 17/02/2022 23:12

Thanks I’ve tried going outside I just don’t know what it is. I’ve brought him back up with me now and got my hand on him by the bed. He will go quiet then start again 🤦🏼‍♀️

Is he on the bed? I would lift up the duvet and let him under by your feet and snuggle right down so he is completely under the covers. My dog can sleep for hours like this - she feels safe and cosy.

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 17/02/2022 23:30

We’ve been for a walk hour the road and he’s had some de stress good night treats and I’ve got him next to me, I thought we were good but he’s started again 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’ll just keep trying to calm him down

Or what happens if you let him outside?
Don't let him out on his own, he could spook and run with a storm on the way/hitting.
Is it his first storm? Google thundershirts and see if you can fashion something similar?
Though in my case I'd just leave my hand on him!

WhatsTheEffingPoint · 17/02/2022 23:34

Google thunderstorms/anxiety wraps, there's a few you tube videos that show you how to make one out of scarfs or shirts....might help. Also maybe some background noise like the tv or radio so the sound of the wind/rain is drowned out. Plus lots of contact like your doing.

FunkyPhantom · 17/02/2022 23:36

Could it be a fox mooching round outside ??

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 17/02/2022 23:40

We do have foxes so he is used to them but he’s never reacted like this. I’ve got classic fm on now too but he’s still going I’m so worried neighbours might hear and hate seeing him so agitated.

He was silent when we walked up the road I’ve no idea what this is

Don't worry about neighbours in a detached!

He could easily be sensing the storm/change in pressure/magnetic activity etc and it could be rattling him a bit.

Just keep him with you and keep a hand on him until he settles down! Wine

Wineat5isfine · 17/02/2022 23:44

My dog has been very unsettled tonight and he’s usually snoring away by the fire. I think they can sense something coming.

I’ve tucked him up in bed with a blanket, hoping it settles him. Good luck x

Housechaos · 17/02/2022 23:46

My usually very calm Spaniel (still very young) has been a manic today. It's not very often he barks but he's been quite vocal. He's loving the wind in his ears.

foxlover47 · 17/02/2022 23:59

My two dogs have just turned 2 and they've been really restless tonight , keep
Wanting to go in the garden then barking in the garden so have to get them in but they've only just laid down with me now , I blamed the full
Moon but it could be they sense the storm. Music might help with the background noise and maybe trying to get him to lay under the duvet , that's worked with mine before ... hope he is ok and you both get to sleep xx

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 17/02/2022 23:59

He’s been quiet for 5 mins by my bed I think he’s barked himself out hopefully we will both get some sleep now well till the storm actually starts! Thank you for all the suggestions and reassurances

Another unsettled 8 month pup here. He has been up and down all night, keeps getting his lead (wanting to go in the garden, but seemingly not for the toilet) I think they can sense the storm en route.

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 18/02/2022 07:38

He finally conked out at around 1245 and not a peep since I kept the radio on all night he’s just woken up and is fine now, can hear the wind outside!

sillysmiles · 18/02/2022 07:54

If this happens again when there's no storm on the way and if he's not neutered there could be a bitch in heat that he's smelling. Definitely don't let him out if that's the case!

sillysmiles · 18/02/2022 07:55

Glad you got a night's sleep with him!
