I live in SE and recently started a role with a national organisation, which I love.

We have four days training, 2 days online and 2 days in person in London. All fine I was happy to travel.

BUT

Tomorrow is day 2 and we are supposed to be in person in London. Almost all of the trains are cancelled and I am scared about travelling 80 miles in the car to C London (don't even know where I'd park).

I've asked my boss if there are any contingency arrangements but she says I need to set off if things look ok in the morning.

I don't want to do that because the worst of the storm looks to be later in the day and then I could easily be stuck.

WIBU to say I'm sorry I can't do tomorrow under the circumstances? Or should I just suck it up and attempt it regardless of how it might impact me?

If the advice is not to travel, you don't travel. No job is worth getting hurt.

sleepyhoglet · 17/02/2022 22:21

Surely they don't need to know you have car access. You were planning to go by train, the trains are cancelled

My role requires travel across branches so being able to drive is a requirement, they know I have car access.

The forecasts I see say it will be worse first thing and clear by lunchtime so I suspect suspect if you are able to make it in uiu should get back

Thank you, these were my thoughts but they don't seem to see it that way.

The London forecasts are saying the worst of the wind will be from midday onwards.

I'm reading the rain will die off in the morning, which isn't what I'm concerned about, but that the high (and dangerous) winds are expected all day.

Why not just see in the morning. A tree could always have blocked your road!

Movingsoon21 · 17/02/2022 22:33

It’s not worth it OP. Just tell them your road is blocked off.

SuitcaseOfWhine · 17/02/2022 22:35

Just say your car won't start/broken down and you can't go.

StCharlotte · 17/02/2022 22:37

If you absolutely have to go, I'd take an overnight bag in case you get stranded and treat myself to a night in a nice hotel and if possible charge it to the company?

Where will you be travelling from?

eunicetoseeyou · 17/02/2022 22:37

Thank you.

I work in a profession (spiritual without wanting to out myself!) where honesty and integrity are key ethical principles and in that sense it would never occur to me to lie.

But I also feel backed into a corner of needlessly travelling when we could be taught online.

I can't charge it to them, they're not paying my travel at all let alone a hotel.

Travelling from Leicester.

Plus I have children I need to be home for! My exh will be dropping them off tomorrow evening after having them all half term. I can't afford to be just stuck indefinitely with no money to pay for it and no childcare.

Trains in the SE will running limited to 50mph just announced on the news. Social care, community nursing and delivery staff will be out as well as emergency services.

Go to station and see in the morning?

Trains are either showing as cancelled or sold out, bar one. And getting there isn't my concern; being stranded in London when I have responsibilities at home in the evening is the issue.

It's very bad that the company aren't paying for your travel!

I wouldn't risk the journey tomorrow, OP

Blossomtoes · 17/02/2022 22:47

Leicester isn’t in the red zone and, according to the news media, the trains are still running but might take longer.

Leicester isn't the problem, sorry I should have clarified I am in Leicester right now, live in SE, getting back to SE tomorrow from London is my worry.

I promise you that trains home are cancelled.

Why would they pay for her commute? Nobody else's commute is paid.

I'd just call in the morning and be honest OP. You do not feel safe to drive and cannot be stranded away from your children.

Queeniepies · 17/02/2022 23:46

@CourtRand it's not her commute; OP has said she has to get the train into London for a training course. She does not normally work in London and travels by car to different sites. They should be paying for the train fare

Sorry for not thinking that through Smile

Given the SE is now under a red warning hopefully your organisation has now seen sense and called it off.

Take care.

eunicetoseeyou · 18/02/2022 11:21

Training is still on.

I've not gone. Manager very unhappy with me :(
