...58 calories.

I realise the 5k doesn't mean much given that I'd didn't run it.

But 30 mins of sweating, puffing, hurting and I burned an effing 58 calories?!

FIFTY EIGHT 😭😭😭😭

If you felt like you had died and your heart rate was 130 you're not that unfit. I get mine to 180/90 on these things. Also measured inaccurately! That is nearly dying. My max heart rate is supposed to be 185 but I smash that 💀☠️

MrsMingech · 17/02/2022 15:07

@NightmareSlashDelightful

(Personal trainer here)

That doesn't sound right. Those machines are notoriously inaccurate. Is this a x-trainer you've got at home or a gym one? Do you know what make it is?

At that effort level without knowing your age or weight and I'm not asking for those so don't tell me I'd (roughly, very roughly) estimate that you burned about 150 to 170 cals.

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter. You got on the bloody thing and got yourself out of breath for half an hour, which is the point of getting on it in the first place. You're not in competition with anyone else, so at one level it doesn't matter what times or distances anyone else does.

The knack is to get back on it in a couple of days' time and see if you can beat your own previous time/distance/effort. Even if only by a smidge.

Ahhhhh I can tell you're a PT, that's exactly what I needed to hear!

Or I couldn't get my HR above 130 because I was too busy dying and gasping for breath? Grin

I remember those cross trainers, from the gym pre-covid, i started at something like 1 or 2 but after a while I needed at least a level 7 to feel like I am doing anything. Keep at it, if you're sweating and breathing heavily it means you're working hard and that's good for your heart, muscles, your health.

You won't lose a lot of weight only by exercising, ever. You cannot outrun a bad diet. I ran a proper 5k last night and came home and ate a huge bolognese portion! I won't lose weight (i'm not trying to) but it keeps me healthy and mentally well.

Bluetrews25 · 17/02/2022 15:12

Mine says I burned about 260 in 34 mins, I did 4 miles. This was on cardio setting so I was going fairly fast for my age. Confused
Any extra calories burned is better than none and your heart will thank you for it.
Keep going! I looooove my crosstrainer.

BoredZelda · 17/02/2022 15:16

I can't lift weight because I piss my pants.

I can't run because I piss my pants.

I got a cross trainer to prevent the pant pissing.

This made me laugh. But not too much as I’d have pissed my pants. 😆

MrsMingech · 17/02/2022 15:17

I don't have a bad diet, I would just like to lose half a stone and figured this would speed things up.

I don't think I will be able to walk tomorrow though...

Don't believe the distances or calories on them, the ones in our gym say much shorter distances than any i've used elsewhere. Although the calories are usually over-estimated rather than under as they assume you're an average sized man unless you can specify otherwise. I wear a chest strap HR monitor, and even on low resistance I'd expect to burn that many in 10minutes on the cross trainer.

TheChosenTwo · 17/02/2022 15:23

Oh if it only goes up to 5 then it’s not so bad Grin
I had visions of your legs just being a blur for a solid half an hour!!

Yes. Also, some machines will include an estimate of basal metabolic rate calories as well as the effort calories, and some only count the effort calories. So you can get wildly different counts depending on the machine.
DomesticatedZombie · 17/02/2022 15:31

I tried to turn it down to zero when I died half way through but there's no zero for it to be turned down to. shock

OP,
try this calculator,
www.omnicalculator.com/sports/elliptical-calorie

you can put your weight and effort.
I think it should be better picture of how many calories you've burned

MrsMingech · 17/02/2022 15:37

Well that's more like it.

I put effort in as mild, because while it did not feel mild, I fear that it was compared to normal folk.

And it says I burned 178 calories, which I'm good with!

The effort your body had to put is didn’t sound mild. It doesn’t matter what it was in comparison to someone else. You were gasping for breath and not capable of giving any more. That’s not mild effort.
Mollysocks · 17/02/2022 15:39

The way I look it at OP, exercise isn’t to lose weight. Diet is to lose weight. Exercise is for fitness and toning.

That’s the only way I can get over not even burning off a digestive after an exercise session.

stayathomer · 17/02/2022 15:40

Oh god OP I really feel for you. I work in a shop where I am active all day long running up and down stairs (record 24 times!) for customers constantly carrying heavy boxes packing and unpacking heavy stock and at the end of the evening I'm so tired. My legs ache and sometimes my chest doesn't feel great and some evenings when I get into bed I'm shaking.

Anyhoo, took in an Apple watch that monitors absolutely everything, it beeped constantly saying 'you look like you've started exercising, would you like us to record your vitals?', told me my heart rate was high and to maybe take a break. At the end of the day we looked and (drum roll!) I'd burned 600 calories and had done only 8000 steps (you know the way they tell the average person to do 10?!). I don't know what I expected but ...Grin

Itsalmostanaccessory · 17/02/2022 15:43

Go and see your GP about the incontinence when active.

You dont have to live like that. They can give referrals to get you help.

They will try to fob you off. You have to be very clear that you're not leaving without a referral for help because it isnt normal or even necessary to live like that. There is help available. Push for it.

FlasherMcGruff · 17/02/2022 15:44

That can’t be right. If I do a reeeeally slow cycle on a cross trainer it burns ten calories in not many seconds. 20-30, at a guess.

Yuckypretty · 17/02/2022 15:46

If you want to loose weight you should diet. Exercise is primarily for fitness.

It does sound a little low though.

The extra endorphins of exercise help me feel happier which in turn makes me in a better mental state not to binge eat.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 17/02/2022 15:48

Op would it be worth seeing your GP if you're serious (not joking) about the incontinence, you shouldn't have to live like that, could be a prolapse.

Minikievs · 17/02/2022 15:51

OP I regularly puss my pants at both weights classes and cardio classes Grin
Black leggings are the only ones I can wear Blush

EveryAvenue · 17/02/2022 15:51

Unless you were going really slowly I don’t understand how that’s correct?

I did a 20 min warm up on level 8 resistance this morning and the machine and both my Apple Watch were at 300 calories burnt.

Minikievs · 17/02/2022 15:51

piss Hmm

Beautiful3 · 17/02/2022 15:59

I used to have a cross trainer, and used it until it broke. It was good for toning my arms, legs and bum. But didn't help me lose weight at all!

PainterMummy · 17/02/2022 16:01

OP, the exercise will have done you good. Particularly having gotten your heart rate up to 130 for that length of time

Diet and exercise together are most successful in losing weight. Just keep up the good work and don’t worry about the calorie counter. If you feel winded as you’re exercising, you can feel for heart rate climbing, it’s going well. Next time, build in that and do a few more minutes. Well done.
