To not pay parking fine for a workman...

We've had workmen round at the house, quote was changed during the work, we've been threatened with lawyers, we've paid and not left negative reviews as was just not worth the hassle. The work wasn't completed and we paid the full amount which was probably twice what we should have paid given there were some major issues.

One of the workmen was given a parking fine whilst here.

We had paid for parking via a visitors permit (Zoned area in London) from our account - this was checked by the workmen to clarify details and accepted as all correct.

Parking ticket was received and we sent through the receipt showing that we had paid for that vehicle for the times required.

When I said we wanted No further contact with the company the manager (ie. the person who is threatening us with lawyers) has said well I will check with workman and then get back to you but if you don't pay it then he will have to.

We are under no obligation to pay for anyone's parking when they visit - there is a car park five minutes walk away with pay and display and there is the ringo app that can be used. They also could have applied for a business parking permit.

I am fucked off because we've been over charged for a service that wasn't completed, threatened with legal action when we asked for a refund, and now we have been asked to pay the full parking ticket amount (even though it's heavily discounted for X number of days).

No other people have had this issue when we've paid for their permits - and most automatically offer to take the money off the bill when it comes (which we never accept).

YANBU - don't need to pay for the parking fine
YABU - you should pay the fine

The arrangements for parking were clearly agreed with the company in advance. If the workman got a fine which he thinks he should not have got then he should take that up with his employers. But they should not be taking it up with you.

Clearly you are not being unreasonable.

YANBU. He is responsible for ensuring his vehicle is parked legally

EatSaidPatriarchy · 17/02/2022 13:48

OK thank you - the hassle has been so much that I am starting to doube myself.

YANBU. They sound like a bunch of chancers.

If you haven't already, I would contact Citizens Advice's consumer helpline to see where you stand re them not completing the work and threatening you with legal action for asking for a refund.

Thanks, we have considered CAB but at the moment we just want to draw a line under it (I'm unwell and just started treatment which is why we wanted the work completed).

However, we do know that we are not the only people who have had this experience with being threatened with legal action!

Do not pay their parking fine.
It is entirely their responsibility.
The threat that they will employ lawyers is laughable.

Cherrysoup · 17/02/2022 14:14

Honestly, I know you’re not well, but please don’t let him get away with this. Contact Cowboy builders or whatever it’s called with Dominic Little get them on the case, with luck, you’d have to do very little.

CheshireSplat · 17/02/2022 14:17

Why did they get fined? Didn't they use the permit you paid for?

Topseyt · 17/02/2022 14:18

Of course you don't pay his parking fine. He was the driver of the vehicle, it was his responsibility to ensure that it was legally parked. His alone.

girlmom21 · 17/02/2022 14:20

The parking fine is absolutely nothing to do with you!

Arabellla · 17/02/2022 14:21

Take them to small claims court over the unfinished work.

Why on earth did you pay them the full amount?!

EatSaidPatriarchy · 17/02/2022 14:40

@Arabellla because I was in the house alone, with men I didn't know and a further male shouting at me down the phone and quite honestly I was very freaked out by this stage.

Particularly as it was in our home. I just wanted a quick ending to the whole fiasco, was assured the work would be completed and wanted to ensure I was safe (most importantly).

TheRealityCheque · 17/02/2022 15:13

Of course you shouldn't pay for it, but as you've been a soft touch and already paid for work that wasn't done anyway the contractors must be pissing themselves, hence trying it on with this additional nonsense.

Karwomannghia · 17/02/2022 15:17

My friend was threatened by her builder when they wouldn’t hand over more cash without questioning what it was needed. They ended up involving the police and registering something with the court.
Enough is enough, if you’re dealing with criminals, tell the police.

Karwomannghia · 17/02/2022 15:18

If it had been a one off I’d have paid the first time and said that’s your lot but this is very different

SmellinOfTroy · 17/02/2022 15:28

fuck off would i pay it - even if you are on company business in a company car and you get a parking ticket you have to pay it!

Hankunamatata · 17/02/2022 15:32

@CheshireSplat

Why did they get fined? Didn't they use the permit you paid for?
This
EatSaidPatriarchy · 17/02/2022 15:36

The permits are online - so it's an app / website and you register the car.

I am unsure why they got fined as they gave me the licence plate details, the colour and make of the car - the required information, and they checked it.

They said this morning that they think I wrote an l (small L) instead of an I but ultimately I feel that they checked it, their car, so their responsibility. Plus if they are using visitor permits everyday surely they would have had this issue before in the last ten years the company has been operating...

Don't pays the fine. Generally ime the employer will say for fines that they cannot say who driving any particular véhicule on any day. Then they bin them.

NorthSouthcatlady · 17/02/2022 16:13

I wouldn’t pay it, it’s their responsibility

EatSaidPatriarchy · 17/02/2022 17:57

Yes, will not pay the fines - I've just looked at both the photo sent and what I put into the parking app and it's identical.
