Uber rating...ridiculous

My partner and I took an uber trip on Saturday to a train station. We were there before the driver, wore our masks did not slam the door, were polite and courteous to the driver and barely spoke. Despite the driver being on the phone ordering a takeaway and driving questionably, my uber rating went down straight after the ride. I have noticed this within the past few months and I have absolutely no idea why! We are nonsmokers, would never eat in the uber, are always on time and courteous so can't imagine why this is?! My partner has also been rated down for not wearing a mask even though it was the driver who was the one not wearing a mask!!! Every time I get into an uber I feel as though I'm on edge and am going to be marked down for some elusive criteria! I find it bizarre that the drivers have so much power and can rate you down for any reason they choose (no way of proving if it was due to race, religion, gender etc) where you're a paying customer and all to often paying over the odds due to elavated prices. I totally understand in cases where the passenger is abusive/drunk/rude etc!

...customers have a rating?! I had no clue!

amusedbush · 15/02/2022 12:01

I don't use Uber a huge amount (very occasional things like getting to the train station after a wedding reception, getting to the train station in Paris at 6am, or to collect my car from its MOT in the pouring rain) but my rating is 4.78 out of 5. Like you, I'm polite and courteous. I am careful with any bags, wear a mask, wear my seatbelt, make polite conversation, say thank you, don't slam the door. I don't drink alcohol so I've never been drunk after an event, I don't smoke and I would never eat in someone's car.

It actually pisses me off when I see it because I've never done anything to deserve it. In fact, I've had some lovely, interesting conversations with Uber drivers!

I never look at mine. Does it affect whether they will pick you up or not? If not, who cares.

PigeonLittle · 15/02/2022 12:06

Was it because you did not tip? Just guessing!

Pennox · 15/02/2022 12:07

You’re meant to tip?

it does
teaandchocolate1 · 15/02/2022 12:08

I noticed that with mine.

I'm also polite, don't smoke and don't slam doors.I think the problem is if you rate them straight away after leaving their car they know that it was you who rated them.

So even if you give them a 5 star review they might feel bitter if you don't tip them.

I always rate and tip straight away, as a notification pops up to remind me.
Pennox · 15/02/2022 12:18

I’m normally drunk so just want to get to bed! Last thing I am doing is logging back into the app to rate the driver or give them a tip! I have given tips a few times the next day if they were particularly nice but mine normally are quiet as it’s normally late.

Velvetteddy93 · 15/02/2022 12:33

I've definitely noticed that it is taking much longer to be picked up!

what is a good rating? Mine is 4.75 apparently which I guess is ok since I never tip! I do in the US but didnt relaise it was expected here.

AlexaShutUp · 15/02/2022 14:04

This is a revelation. I never even realised that I had an uber rating!Shock Have just looked and apparently mine is 5*.Smile

Sleeperagent · 15/02/2022 14:26

The same happened to my husband after a ride. He was quiet, polite and gave a tip. He had no idea what he could have done to offend the driver.

amusedbush · 15/02/2022 14:36

I've googled and apparently the driver has to rate the passenger as soon as the journey is over. They can't accept another fare until they have done it, so they are rating people before they have a chance to rate and tip.

There is a subreddit about this from the perspective of the drivers and it's baffling. It can be as simple as you not standing exactly where the pin is on the map, or your journey was too short.

If that's the case, I don't know what I have done to deserve my 5* rating. I can never work out where the flipping pin is!

I'm irrationally quite proud of it!Grin

amusedbush · 15/02/2022 14:44

@AlexaShutUp

Do you use it often? Everyone starts with 5* and then it drops if a driver downrates you.

I'm getting internally defensive and pissed off thinking about my rating because I've never done a thing wrong!

Fairly often but not regularly. Maybe a couple of times a month?

AlexaShutUp · 15/02/2022 14:50

And please don't piss on my parade by telling me that that's why I have 5 stars. I am enjoying my newly discovered status!Grin

pepperaunt · 15/02/2022 14:51

Agreed. I mostly 5 and tip, am always polite and masked, and have gone down to 4.7 I must smell or something…

I sincerely apologise, I'm just bitter and jealous Grin

Things like this really make you think twice about jury trials don’t they!
