London Transport Child Confusion!!

BottomlessPit · 14/02/2022 11:26

Travelling to London with DS (12 and 10). We haven’t pre-booked Oyster Zip cards for them as it’s an impromptu trip.

Can I put DS12 on his own phone contactless app using the same linked credit card as I have? Or will it confuse the system? Should I put him on a different card? Will he be charged as an adult?

Do I just usher DD10 in front of me through barriers? Will I be challenged for this looking like I’m trying not to pay? I do have his passport to prove age but don’t really want to have to have it in my hand at every barrier.

Thanks for any advice! X

With the 10yr old, yes, just go to the large gate (the one for luggage and pushchairs) and usher them through with you. I also have a 10yr old and regularly travel around London with them, don’t think I’ve ever ever been asked her age by the staff and I never carry her passport!

With the 12 yr old - yes, a contactless card of any kind will charge the adult fare. Buy a paper ticket or one day travel card when you get to a tube station.

I’ve regularly done the ushering thing right in front of tube staff by the way - it’s what you’re meant to do, not some sneaky trick! Smile

You could pick up a normal oyster card from a main tube station eg Euston and ask the staff to put the Young Visitor discount on

The 10 year old you go through the family/luggage gate

I have fear of authority issues!! 😳 Thanks - that makes me feel better! Xx
