Hello
Im thinking of buying a holiday home here. It would be a weekend / summer home for me an DH. We want to be close to the coast and to areas In Dorset but have a limited budget of 230k

Does anyone have any experience of the area? We are late 30s with no children

Thank you

If you mean West Coker near Yeovil Somerset then yes. There is a butcher, small shop and pub there. Would I want a holiday home there? Not sure. It’s a nice place but not a lot going on and you will need a car to get everywhere unless you catch a bus to Crewkerne or Yeovil.

What did you especially like about West Coker? I am very local - what are you looking for? Maybe I could suggest other villages to consider

That would be great thank you! We are looking for a village feel, close to or in the countryside. We are looking for country walks, nice pubs, close enough to drive to the coast etc

Do you know Crewkerne at all, tempted by that as it’s mainline to London but not sure what the place is like?

I used to live in crewkerne it has everything you need eg shops, restaurant, pubs etc and literally 35 mins drive to Lyme Regis or a little further to West Bay.

Have a look at Ilminster, norton sub Hamdon (walkable distance to Ham Hill), Hinton St George (it’s like a set scene from Midsomer murders absolutely beautiful), haselbury plucknett or Merriott.

I just seen that you mention main line to London from Crewkerne....you will definitely need a car to get around here. Our public transport is more or less non existent (one bus every two hours where I am) and expensive. Saying that there is a train from Yeovil pen mill to Weymouth but it is not a pleasant journey - full carriages and drunks coming back from Weymouth to Yeovil.

Look at the villages I mentioned - quieter with a few amenities and a short drive to the coast or the moors.

No idea what it’s like but my surname is ‘coker’ so it must be a good place 😛

We live nearby and almost bought in W Coker but preferred to be somewhere with a few more amenities within walking distance. As a PP had suggested I'd look at some of the villages in the surround area - South Petheron is lovely and has a lot more going on but is also in the countryside. Wherever you choose, you'll need transportation - we don't even have a bus pass through which was a shock when we moved!
