Does anyone else have an insta-feed full of people showing off their interior design? It appears lots of people I 'know' have gone down this route. I can't quite work out what they get from it but it must be quite a job constantly framing and photographing. And -as if that isn't bad enough - they record lengthy stories of themselves talking about where they have sourced a cushion from. A cushion ffs! What's it all about? Is it in the hope they'll get free stuff and become interior influencers?

There's a lot of boring grey and white interiors on my feed

SmolCat · 13/02/2022 16:26

I do it! Not for the hope of free stuff but because it’s fun. I started when I moved and was looking for ideas. You get to meet people with similar interests to you (interiors and design) and chat and build a online friendships.

Plus, I can talk about my hobby to people who are interested, rather than boring the socks off DP.

Instagram only shows you what you’re already clicking on. So if you have a feed full of things you don’t find interesting start searching for things you do and the algorithm will change what you see.

Following people isn’t mandatory, don’t follow a load of interiors accounts if you hate them.

Hm2020 · 13/02/2022 16:31

Im new to insta can I just ask what’s with all the beige? Perfect children in beige parents in beige in a beige house I see grey is being pushed out.

ohhooh · 13/02/2022 16:37

I love it!! I'm really getting into my interior style after having my first owned home and realising I can do what I want - I love seeing my friends houses and finding out where nice bits are from, I follow loads of interior accounts.

Also on beige - it's my favourite colour 😂 there's so many tones of beige, and when combined with cream / black accents / gold accents / light oak and wood then it's so calming and fab! Then I can jazz it up with the occasional deep pop of colour (think teal or dark navy or blush pink). I'm obsessed, it makes my house feel big and airy and put together. It's a great neutral colour when you don't want white everywhere. I also wear mainly neutrals and black, I just can't stop!

I'll get off my beige fan appreciation box now 😂

SmolCat · 13/02/2022 16:41

@Hm2020 @NeesAndToes if you interact with grey and beige then it will show you more grey and beige. If you’re interested in interiors on Instagram then start searching for things you like. As soon as you do that your feed will be tailored to you. There’s a lot more than greige out there.

Or, if you’re not interested in interiors then start searching for things you are actually interested in.

Your feed is only full of this if you have been clicking on it and looking for it. My feed is not full of it. Because I have not done that.

Samanabanana · 13/02/2022 16:44

I'm an interiors insta wanker Grin I do it because interiors is my hobby, I like faffing with my house, sharing tips and inspo with like minded people. And also enjoy the odd freebie. Nothing in my house is grey!

This. I had been lurking on loads if Mrs Hinch type stuff wishing my mental health was stable enough that I could maintain an immaculately clean and tidy house 🤪 it wasn't doing me any good and once I went back to looking at stuff I'm really interested in like history and historical costume my feed reverted back to that type of content pretty quickly.

Sorry I quoted the wrong post! Confused

Classica · 13/02/2022 17:03

Interiors are my favourite thing to look at on Instagram. I like to follow someone who has a distinct style, even if it's not particularly my style, as you can pick up ideas from all kinds of places.

I was so confused 😂

If you like historical costume - Bernadette banner might interest you! She's fab and does YouTube videos too.

Classica · 13/02/2022 17:04

I haven't seen any grey or crushed velvet on my feed though.

Hasselhoffsheadband · 13/02/2022 17:10

The thing about interiors is that trends change so quickly and things become dated so quickly that I would find it impossible and so expensive to keep up!

scootalooser · 13/02/2022 17:15

I mostly have interiors and style on my insta - I love it! Lots of inspiration for my own home which I would never in a million years put on social. Style much more hit and miss - style Insta people seem to
be a bit basic.

Summerfun54321 · 13/02/2022 17:18

I don’t understand why people tart up themselves or their houses and document it like other people are interested. I love interior design so follow professional interior designers on Instagram.

‘Like other people are interested’ is quite a condescending, snobbish thing to say. I am interested. Lots of people are.

Don’t get me wrong, I do follow professional interior designers too, but in many ways prefer the realism and the “hey I tried this thing” approach of the every day ‘tarter upper’.

If a professional interior designer posted about their interiors before they had studied it and developed it into a career would you still follow them? They’d still have the eye and the interest and the passion. I’m happy to look at things I find interesting without shutting them down if it suddenly comes to light that they don’t have a specific qualification.

SmolCat · 13/02/2022 17:38

@ohhooh I love Bernadette Banner! The Holmes collection she made was amazing! And her fascination with Mrs Crocombe and the English Heritage videos. Love her.

Wootothewho · 13/02/2022 17:54

Love an an insta home page but when oh when did people go from buying things to sourcing them?!

scootalooser · 13/02/2022 17:58

I totally agree with @SmolCat

Professional interiors are a world away from a lived in space. I do follow some professionals but find them much less relatable and too purist / hardcore.

cinderhella · 13/02/2022 18:21

They all look the same! I came across a woman from Glasgow with a really colourful house which isn’t to my taste at all but I love looking at it as a break from the neutrals Grin
