Underrated or must go destinations

Following on from the overrated travel thread a few weeks ago (agreed with some of the places that kept coming up but not all).

What are your underrated or must try destinations (or restaurants/hotels or experiences)?

I must confess this is slightly self serving as we have a big anniversary this coming winter and a big birthday for me Autumn '23 and I have no idea what to do. A few of the places on my list came up on the overrated list so there's more research to be done I think (I want to get this right). Looking for places we could do with DC (4/5 yo) or as a couple - open to either. Open cheque book (within slight reason).

Seville is definitely under rated. It's beautiful but wouldn't take kids, there's not much for them to do.

Thanks @Swisscheeseleaves my godparents have a place in Spain that's quite close to Seville so that could be an idea.

I loved Sicily. Really laid back and great food. We stayed in an agriturismo rather than a resort.

The Asturias region of Northern Spain is beautiful and there were hardly any other tourists there.

Or how about the Norwegian fjords? It's expensive there but absolutely worth it.

Further afield we loved Vietnam and Hong Kong.

I think Corfu is one of the most beautiful places on earth.

I loved Valencia and the people are much friendlier than in Barcelona it’s also not so busy.

Knickyknackynoo · 13/02/2022 12:50

I've not been to Corfu in years @7eleven will add to the investigate list.

Fuerteventura the beaches. Better than some Caribbean I’ve been to.

Montenegro. I think it's stunning but I don't know many people who have been there.

Lisbon. Stunningly beautiful. Vintage trams. Really came as a pleasant surprise.

Since it's autumn/winter, for me it would have to be Venice
IMO it's one of the few places that looks exactly as you expect it to and never disappoints - also it'll be far less crowded at that time of year, and the late-year sun does something to the views yiou'll never forget
You might even get to see it in the mist and that really is something to experience

LjubIjana and Lake Bohinj in Slovenia and Bratislava in Slovakia.
I recommend both to people all the time.
Both the cities are a bit like a Disney version of a city, or at least the small parts of the city attracting tourism at least.
Lake Bohinj is just beautiful! Very quiet as it mostly attracts hikers, cyclists etc. So may not be interesting to you. Lake Bled is closer to Ljubljana and attractive but I thought a bit overrun. Both would be suitable for a young child, as long as they liked being out in nature they are very accommodating of children and a lot of the bars have playgrounds and serve food.

I really liked Genoa in terms of a city break.
