To think it's not normal for my 5yo to be sick when she has a cough?

Every time my 5yo gets a cough/cold she vomits with it. Either from the coughing itself or from the congestion. She was sick 5 times last night every time she had a big coughing fit. She wants to eat but then keeps bringing everything back up, it's like this with every cough/cold. I thought she would have grown out of it by now! Sad

Unfortunately some kids have a hair trigger gag reflex. Have stayed home with DS2 more than once because of the exclusion rule for D&V even though I know he doesn't have a tummy bug, he's just coughed and made himself sick. It's really frustrating and you have my full sympathies!! He is 8 now and I think he is starting to grow out of it though, if that helps...

Svara · 13/02/2022 08:07

Mine only had that with whooping cough. But if it's with every cold it's unlikely to be that.

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 13/02/2022 08:09

My DD did this. Grew out of it at about the age yours is now.

PotteringAlong · 13/02/2022 08:10

Mind were like this too. I think it is normal. Annoying, but normal Flowers

Didiplanthis · 13/02/2022 08:10

I still do it and I'm 47 🤷‍♀️... its my gag reflex. I've got a stinking cold and was sick with coughing 3 times last night..

Quantity5 · 13/02/2022 08:11

Mine did it until 8/9 ish. Can still reflux after a particularly bad cough as a teen!

RightOnTheEdge · 13/02/2022 08:12

My dd used to be like this too. Every time she had a chesty cough she used to be sick. She's 11 now and finally grew out of it a couple of years ago.

Giraffesandbottoms · 13/02/2022 08:12

My 3 year old does this!

OhFuckBloodyHell · 13/02/2022 08:12

I have a weird gag reflex - not coughing related, but often once I've been sick I can't stop. I have to take anti nausea drugs to stop it if it happens.

Your mention of her bringing everything up despite wanting to eat makes me wonder if it might be the same for her?

Lockdownbear · 13/02/2022 08:12

I out grew it about that age but then it came back when I was in my 20s. A right heavy cold will have me going to bed with a bucket.
Feels better once it's up.

sarahc336 · 13/02/2022 08:13

Yes it is quite common in children op. It should improve with age bless her xx

Onlyforcake · 13/02/2022 08:13

My eldest could cough for about half a minute after that she'd start being sick. Congestion also set off my youngest only last month, he's still five. Coughing doesn't affect him the same way.

fuckfuckfuck2021 · 13/02/2022 08:28

I'm still the same as an adult! 2 of my children are the same and they both had really bad reflux as babies, I think it's pretty normal for some people as they have a really sensitive gag reflex.

Chouetted · 13/02/2022 08:37

I also still do this as an adult. My mother did it too.

Mol1628 · 13/02/2022 08:39

My 7yo does this but much less frequently now when he was a toddler it was every cough.

My older child has never done it!

CPGyellowwallpaper · 13/02/2022 08:41

Have you ever had her tested for asthma?

Dd used to do this (now has huge food issues as a result) and was eventually diagnosed at 3.

I do it every time I cough hard, am also asthmatic

MonicaGellerBing · 13/02/2022 09:37

My 5 year old is exactly the same OP. When she has a cough we carry the sick bucket round the house with us because it's inevitable she'll be sick. She has a very sensitive gag reflex and is sick quite often! Hoping she'll grow out of it...

Lockdownbear · 13/02/2022 10:20

I think some people are sick with a gag reflex other are sick with a build up of phlegm / junk in their system.

girafferafferaffe · 13/02/2022 10:21

My dd used to do this. Just a massive gag reflex

TeddyTonks · 13/02/2022 10:23

I do this at 35, but I have asthma and often coughing fits will turn into an attack. It's so horrible, the poor thing. Does she have any respiratory symptoms at other times or is it only when she has a cough/cold? I can be pretty much asymptomatic 80-90% of the time but minor respiratory bugs really tip me over the edge.

labyrinthlaziness · 13/02/2022 10:25

Unfortunately some people do do this, I do it as an adult if I have a very bad coughing fit.

Hope your DD is better soon. If you are worried you can ask the GP in case there is anything else it could be.

labyrinthlaziness · 13/02/2022 10:26

Agree with others that it would be worth ruling out asthma as a reason why her cough might be worse than other children.

Fundays12 · 13/02/2022 10:26

I do this and so does my youngest. I have a terrible gag reflex and throw up easily.

Tricked2003 · 13/02/2022 10:28

I'm still the same, coughing and congestion make me gag. (I'm 54)

Cosywosy · 13/02/2022 10:29

When my daughter started nursery she had a run of colds for a few months and was sick almost every night in bed. We raised her head with a wedge under the mattress which helped a little. I think it was congestion.

My brother in his 30s is always sick with a sore throat. I think it's just how some people are.
