Trivial home decor question

This is entirely trivial so if you’re looking for a serious thread hit the back button now.

I have a 5x5 Kallax which I’m using as a room divider. It looks a bit messy as I’ve got a fair bit of stuff on there.

I’ve bought two massive sheets of MDF to make the back solid so it will block the back, I can use the shelves, it won’t look messy from the visible side and I can use the back like a wall and hang some artwork, pictures etc.

DH prefers it see through, so do I but I want to have it as usable as possible.

Anyone else blocked off their Kallax back? Is the whole point they’re decorative and open?

YABU - it’s decorative leave it open
YANBU - crack on and block off the back.

Maybe a compromise could work for both of you. You could add some doors and/or baskets from Ikea to help with storage and close off some of the spaces while keeping others open for your more decorative items.

Also put some trim on it to. I’d you look on Pinterest there are some lovely IKEA up cycles.

@Comocomida

I’ve put a row of baskets at the bottom, then drawers and then cupboard’s - it’s the top two rows that are a bit messy. Plus the backs of cupboards and drawers are a bit ugly too.

@Freddiefox

Great idea - I’ll have a look. I forget about Pinterest.

I would just use baskets tbh. The wicker ones look nice and the basic drona ones are super cheap and huge.

Open ones use for things you want to see through like nice vase/ tea pot/ plant

@Caspianberg

The baskets do look nice but the main function of the cupboards and drawers is for storage for my crafting and baskets aren’t a good fit for that.

Could you MDF the back of some and leave others open?
Perhaps 2 bits of MDF back to back so that the visible bit at the back is not left "raw", as it were.
Bit of pvc trim along the joints at the back to neaten the edges.
You can hide a multitude of sins with pvc trim!
