Disappeared threads

I was on a long thread here on AIBU earlier (under a name change), spent a long time on it as the subject was interesting to me, and put some effort into making some personal contributions/thoughts. Then it disappeared, which was really annoying. I understand that theads have to be policed and moderated, but when this is a problem with a poster, does that really mean a whole thread has to go poof? There were a number of potentially useful and helpful posts and interesting perspectives (including, I like to think, my contribution) which then all just disappeared, it was very disappointing.

What was the deletion message?

Some personal attacks and troll hunting, they said, and the OP had an inconsistent posting history. As far as I had read all the personal attacks were against the OP, who, it being AIBU, had asked for comment on their actions. Not sure where the troll hunting came in.

I just thought maybe there could be some way to conserve potentially useful/constructive posts rather than delete the whole thread (which I spent a lot of the morning so far reading and contributing to).
