Silly issue but my partner is saying he’s nearly 36 and his birthday if the 5th august in my view you’re not nearly the next age to about three months before

OP posts:
YerAWizardHarry · 11/02/2022 19:42

He’s closer to his next birthday than his last soo…

jimmyreckon · 11/02/2022 19:45

He's in his 36th year...

TroysMammy · 11/02/2022 19:46

Someone once said some legal papers ask age next birthday. Don't know if that's true though.

I was 54 in January so I say I've just turned 54. In July if asked and I know some may say it's childish but I would say I'm 54 and a half. In November for example I would say I'll be 55 in a couple of months.

He's not nearly 36, he's 35 and a half.

cuno · 11/02/2022 19:48

I get what you mean OP. When people spend half the year saying they're almost the next age up. Unless you're on the cusp of turning 36, what difference does it make, just say you're 35. I get it though when you're coming up to a milestone (nearly 18, nearly 30, nearly 80 etc), fair enough you're anticipating in the year running up to it. But 36 is hardly a milestone!

CrinklyCraggy · 11/02/2022 19:52

I say I'll be 52 this year...

HelloFrostyMorning · 11/02/2022 20:01

I have been telling people this past half a year or so that I am nearly 60, when I am 57 ... Wink

If he wants to say he is nearly 36, so what?

TheSoapyFrog · 11/02/2022 20:18

My son's 8th birthday is 4th August and he's been saying he's nearly 8 since about 3 days after he turned 7.
My 40th is in September and I've been saying I'm nearly 40 for a couple of years!

Faevern · 11/02/2022 20:22

@HelloFrostyMorning why would you say your nearly 60?

HelloFrostyMorning · 11/02/2022 20:24
@HelloFrostyMorning why would you say your nearly 60?
Because I want to.

BuritoCat · 11/02/2022 20:26

Tell him he's wrong, he's nearly 432 months old. Grin

This reminds me of the "oh my toddler is 32 months old" debate.

Dutchesss · 11/02/2022 20:27

I think I stopped doing this after I turned 18.
I still do it for my children though, just turned 6, 6 and a half, almost 7. It doesn't really make a difference if you are 35 or 36.

HelloFrostyMorning · 11/02/2022 20:28
@HelloFrostyMorning why would you say your nearly 60?
@Faevern

Are you not going to ask @TheSoapyFrog why she has been saying she is nearly 40 for a couple of years, when she is not 40 til September? Why did you decide to target just me ???

FlowerPig · 11/02/2022 20:31

Omg one of my biggest annoyances with DP!! Every single time someone asks how old our dogs are he will say "they'll be 5/7 next time" even if it's 11 months from one of their birthdays. Drives me nuts!!!
They're the age they are until a few weeks before their birthday, THEN you can say "nearly 5/7".

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 11/02/2022 20:41

This bugs me as well OP, for no good reason at all because everyone is of course right - what difference does it make?!

My mum always used to do it when we were closing in on a birthday and she was cross with us "look you're EIGHT YEARS OLD" to which I would obviously reply "NO I'M ONLY SEVEN!". That always calmed things down GrinWink

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 11/02/2022 20:45

I used to live in a country where people gave their age as the age they'd be turning on the NEXT birthday. That was confusing at first until I got used to it!

He'd fit right in.

I know they do this in Korea, when you're born you're 1! Did you live there by any chance or does this happen across different countries/cultures?
Faevern · 11/02/2022 21:13

@HelloFrostyMorning because our posts crossed. I didn't target you I asked a question 🤷‍♀️ are you going to answer it?

Glitterygreen · 11/02/2022 21:24

Urgh my mum used to annoy me with this too OP.

As soon as I turned one age, she would start telling people I either was or was nearly the next one up. I don't know why she did it and it used to drive me crazy.

PerrinAybara · 11/02/2022 21:28

At least he knows his age. I can never remember what age I am.

toldgoodDog · 11/02/2022 21:35

Oh I was hoping it was Barack Obama asking this questionSad

AuntyJanet · 11/02/2022 21:37

I didn’t realise anyone over the age of 10 claimed to be “nearly” the next age up. Surely at 35 you’d be trying to argue you were “close to 34”.

RedRobin100 · 11/02/2022 21:53

Of course he’s nearly 36…

WonderfulYou · 11/02/2022 22:11

But he is nearly 36…..

Honestly I couldn’t get worked up about this.
It’s different if he kept saying he’s nearly 60 or something.

Didioverstep · 12/02/2022 01:45

@cuno turkey do that too. Drives me mad when birthdays come up. Had friends move here from there and had to tell their poor daughter that here she is 12 not 13 as the school was confused why she was saying she is one year older. She was so upset as she had gone back 1 year.

katy1111 · 12/02/2022 02:02

I will be 36 in April, but I will remain 35 until the goddamn minute I turn 36!
