Have you ever got a job by speculatively approaching an organisation you really admire?

Have you ever successfully landed a job this way - either a salaried position or freelance work? Or would you ever try?

I'm wondering about contacting a charity I really like the look of, their whole mission fits with my values and is relevant to my MSc. I know they are gearing up to hosting a large conference next year so keep thinking there might be suitable roles becoming available. At the moment they are advertising for more senior positions.

Would you just keep waiting to see if something suitable is posted as a vacancy, or would you get in touch with a cv?

Yes, when I was self employed I got lots of work this way

Have a look at the what colour is your parachute book/ website which details a way to approach companies you are interested in, by finding contacts etc.
It’s about how you fit with what they need, not how they fit with you…

Yes I actually did this with a charity once before without any prior experience in the sector. Looked up the person who I’d likely report into on LinkedIn, worked out his email address and sent him an email. They happened to be about to start hiring for a role so hired me.

Oh I've wondered is that book worth a read!

We’ve had people approach us and ask for work even when we have no vacancies out.

You’ve nothing to loose.

This this is always how I work but I'm freelance. I've been offered in house jobs though.

Yes and I was given an interview and worked for the company for over 4 years. Nothing ventured, nothing gained as the saying goes.

ChargingBuck · 09/02/2022 17:50

Yes, for the past 20 years. Freelance. AMA!

Verv · 09/02/2022 17:50

Yes, I did it just over 4 years ago and haven't looked back.

Yes I did this and got a sales job. Didn't admire the company though, I was just desperate for a job.

Brilliant to hear of people landing work this way!
