Nerdle or Wordle

Hornetfarmer · 08/02/2022 19:16

DH and I have just spent 45 minutes debating whether Nerdle or Wordle involves more skill. I think that Wordle is more luck - once you have got to a certain point then it is pretty much luck and guessing a word which fits that sequence. Your first word makes a difference but that sort of takes the skill out of it for me.
I find Nerdle better for offering challenge. He says it is the same.
FYI There are 17 000 combinations for Nerdle and 5000 for Wordle.

Yabu: he's right they're the same
Yanbu: I'm right and Nerdle offers more challenge

Yes we are very sad!

I'm a maths teacher- I love nerdle! Defo more challenging than wordle, but more fun because of that.

ViceLikeBlip · 08/02/2022 21:52

@HollowTalk

5*40=200
20+60=80
125/25=5

KatherineofGaunt · 08/02/2022 22:22

@HollowTalk

But the = can only be in one of two places.

You could have a high 2- digit number multiplied that gives an answer that's 3-digits, though.

HollowTalk · 08/02/2022 22:33

Yes sorry, I wasn't thinking!!!

randomsabreuse · 08/02/2022 22:40

I like Byrdle. Got a nice mix of Latin, names and musical terms plus random church terms to mess with the obvious letter distribution...

Sidge · 08/02/2022 22:46

Sweardle is fun!

Thanks for the link to Globle, I’ll enjoy that.

I don’t like Nerdle as I’m rubbish with numbers. Much better with words.

MinglingFlamingo · 08/02/2022 22:54

Nerdle is more logical somehow. You know there's got to be an equals sign in it for a start

Wordle is guess work for the first two goes at least then figuring out what letter combinations fit

Lewdle I thought my swearing made a sailor blush but clearly not.

JoanOgden · 08/02/2022 22:57

I find Nerdle more challenging, I had to work out the 13 times table the other day! Feels like real brain exercise whereas Wordle I can usually knock off within a minute or two.

CassieJumped · 08/02/2022 23:38

Tried to do squardle and can't get it at all!

Talipesmum · 08/02/2022 23:47

I like them both but like a pp I think wordle is harder - it’s all about knowing how words work and typical letter combinations, and I can be really stuck just trying to think of a word that could possibly fit with the constraints after a line or two.

But nerdle is just logical - it’s much easier to work out as long as you can do maths. You can figure out a lot from knowing where the equals sign should go - are you aiming for one, two or three digits - and there are loads of “slots” and not that many numbers to choose from so it gets narrowed down pretty quickly.

If I get wordle in two, it’s probably luck. But I’ve got nerdle in two through careful logic before now. So I think wordle is more challenging!

DropYourSword · 08/02/2022 23:50

Based on previous threads where many posters were clueless about order of operations, Nerdle would be nigh on impossible for them some days!

But yeah, I find Wordle less challenging than Nerdle. I aim to get Wordle in 3. I'm disappointed if it takes me to 5. I'll never get Nerdle in 3!

LemonDrizzles · 09/02/2022 05:17

Same. I have two starters that use the main consonants/vowels and all numbers/most signs. I typically work out nerdle in 3, sometimes 4.

But the other day, the wordle word was frame and I went on with so many other combos I didn't even get it! Like grave... They are both a bit about luck

Della1 · 09/02/2022 07:09

Nerdle is harder for me but I don’t think wordle is all about guessing. You are subconsciously using a lot of spelling rules e.g which letters usually go together, letters that combine to make the ending of a word etc.

LavenderAskew · 09/02/2022 07:35

Nerdle is easier. It's more logical.

Bit of luck needed in what symbols and numbers you use first - as with WordIe depends on your starter word.

I usually get Nerdle in three. I think it's because you can use more numbers/symbols in the first guess than you can use letters in your Wordle first guess. By the second Nerdle guess you have a better idea what's in it and what's not.

Nerdle does annoy me though - because if you get two right single digits but reversed (which make no difference to the sum) its not 'right'. Such as

263=36 - two red and six green

623=36 - correct.

What starter do you use in Nerdle that includes all numbers/most signs?!
DropYourSword · 09/02/2022 08:25

squareword.org 9: 15 guesses

Wordle is just as much logic as nerdle.

I personally wouldn’t say it’s about luck - it’s about logic, elimination of letters and then it’s much easier to work out.

HollowTalk · 10/02/2022 11:05

Can I just check something? If a number goes black, does that mean it won't appear anywhere on the row or just that it won't appear eg in the solution?

HollowTalk · 10/02/2022 11:25

I did it Nerdle today in 3 moves!

LavenderAskew · 10/02/2022 15:22

That number or symbol isn't is any part of the equation.

If it's gone black, don't use it again in your next guess.
