'Weak positive' for gastric parietal cell antibody??

Posting for traffic as health ones tend to get missed.

Total says it all.... 'weak positive' for gastric parietal cell antibody. Anybody have a clue what this means? This is a follow on from some blood tests. Have been identified as having low vitamin D and on tablets.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor.

So, in a nutshell, you've had a weak positive for an antibody that suggests that you may be developing/have developed the autoimmune disease pernicious anaemia.

Pernicious anaemia is a condition by which the gut can't absorb vitamin b12, which in turn affects the body's ability to produce red blood cells - hence anaemia.

It used to be a very serious condition; these days it is easily treatable by 3 monthly (I think) injections of vitamin b12.

Sorry, to add - that's the explanation I know about (my mum has pernicious anaemia). There may be others or it may be nothing to worry about.

Thanks for reading again if you are. I'm almost on tablet number 4 for vitamin D and I really don't feel any better. I've been off work today and yesterday with flu like symptoms, cough and bad throat. I'm needing to sleep in the day for an hour or so to keep up. I woke up this morning with a headache which felt like a hangover. It's getting me down so much. It's now half term and I genuinely don't think I've got the energy to do anything exciting with the kids. I feel so low.

Sorry to hear you are feeling rubbish. The vitamin d will take a few weeks to kick in. What dose are you taking and how low were you?

Has anyone talked to you about your vitamin b12 levels? Or the parietal cell antibodies?

Hi @MirabelM I have this but GP said not to worry. But I have a whole host of vile symptoms. Did anything come of it for you?

Rainbowgirrl · 09/08/2023 16:40

If you are still having symptoms you are not having your B12 often enough.

@MirabelM and @Mumma02 how often are you having B12 from the doctor?

Mumma02 · 09/08/2023 17:16

@Rainbowgirrl I've never had one...they told me the weak positive means nothing?!

Rainbowgirrl · 10/08/2023 11:08

@Mumma02 have you had your b12, folate and ferritin tested?

You need to not be supplementing for a true measure in your bloods.
